winavi ain't purty darling but it does the job! and it doesn't hog all your system resources, well not too badly. I am fixated on video this week because Im making dvds for all the new teachers at my current position. I have learned to say things like "transcode" like I know what they mean...

After all, China is great... but uhh China without CSI just isn't muc ...fun...

Charlie - too cute! I love it! Now I have to make another one of Lilly, my problem is not the video, but getting the sound to work!! BTW, you sound just like I thought you would (being from the South like you are!!)

Andrea - YOU CRACK ME UP! I would be happy to tape CSI for you!!

but but Kimmy... why do you need to tape it for me when I've got a perfectly good computer, download the files and burn them to DVD for the general enjoyment of all :p . And before anyone slams me,, I CAN'T get Grissom any other way. Surely some of you understand....I mean it's Gill,, okay?

By the way, I just got the new Bond on DVD from the DVD store for 6 kwai, about 80cents....not too impressed with HIM though. Grissom,,,, I need Grissom....ohh and Monk,, Gotta have Mr. Monk.

god I'm old.

Hi Charlie,

Well, this is one area that I (at least I should be) an expert. I'm an indie film maker otherwise known here as Alfie (Alfred H.Cockatiel's) dad (which explains the name I guess).

You got Pinnacle right? Which model? Did you transfer via Firewire or via analog cable?

Okay that's probably all Greek-speak but here's a basic rundown. Your machine communicates best digitally but most earlier machines operate using analog, which must be translated into 'computer speak' and which takes A LOT of space. If you transfer it using the multicolored jacks then that's analog. If you're using the special 'firewire' connector that's digital. It'll save you A LOT in space and time.

Ulead is okay, as far as I can tell, for mere video clips but I think you probably do need to have your video capture card etc. there. Personally I use Adobe Premiere with my ATI Radeon All In Wonder which has served me faithfully for the better part of 8 years. ATI's a pretty good company for cards I think and Premiere is industry standard for basic video editing.

You'd want to try and save the file in DIGITAL format as much as possible. There may be an option for that in Ulead, not too sure. Any other format will use up A LOT of time and A LOT of hard drive space. Check and see if there are save file type options which will let you save digitally.

You know... I've not taken a video of Alfie yet (well my camera seems to be malfunctioning - my mom lent it out and now the video head seems to be producing the fatal 'static' on playback). But I really gotta get my little Alfie angel on file too.

Best wishes and I hope this helps!
Tommy and Alfie

P.S.
Stick to the basic formats, just make sure you find the one that lets you capture (the important step) and save in digital rather than analog format. Basic formats would be Quicktime, WMV, MPEG and perhaps MP4. DON'T save things in Ulead or anything else. I learned the hard way. I have discs full of the old MJPEG (Matrox JPEG) format that I will NEVER see again because the hardware that created it crashed and the entire thing is obsolete.

Oh Charlie loved your little video clip. It is nice to hear what someone sounds like instead of just imagining it. I will have to get a clip of Kylie it will probably consist of her trying to break the camera lol <img border="0" alt="[laughing]" title="" src="graemlins/laugh[1].gif" />

Thanks a lot, Tom! I'm using Firewire and DV so that is all in line. I think now I just have to practice more. I have Pinnacle Basic but have been using the Ulead for now. I am sticking with the WMV medium resolution format for now as I seem to understand it but will surely experiment. LOL Looking forward to seeing pictures of Alfie! smile

I wish I had the forethought to have a video recording when I sat with Stosh in front of the computer and played your clip of Baby at full screen size !!! Stosh's reaction was SOOOO amazingly funny! A video would have painted a thousand words. I am going to try to set that up sometime later in the week to see if he has the same reaction.... I am still cracking up over it!!

Well yeah she does. I played her again today for cyrus. I think what you have there my southern friend, is the cockatoo equivelant of Playboy magazine, without the staple in her belly button. Cyrus just stares, if he was a human guy he'd be laughing a little and saying things like "ohhh baby , I want me some of THAT!!! "Amazing. Telegraph hill-- no reaction, polyvision, no reaction, 6 hours in front of Utube playing other peoples bird videos no reaction. Baby Polka? I think we're talking betrothal here.

No problem Charlie. I'm not actually too familiar with Ulead and Pinnacle Basic's setup, being a diehard Adobe Premiere loyalist but they should be transmitting in digital format if you are using a firewire AND if you got the settings right.

Oh, forgot to mention. You may want to also record at a lower resolution and screen size, that's got a lot to do with it as well. The flipside a moment, once recorded really can't be repeated. A way to get around this is to record at high settings and then RE-RENDER IT at a smaller size for posting online.

Looking forward to more videos of your cutey!

Best wishes and hope this helped!
