Awesome!! I think Princess is getting to know what a lucky Too she is!! PS: Is that the stuff from Lowes you posted about?

Jerry, I am so impressed! (read JEALOUS!) Hopefully by the time Billy is ready for an aviary we'll be able to a new home where we can not worry about neighbors. Princess looks absolutely joyful.

Looks great Jerry !! Is the wire pretty much what you expected?
Princess looks as if she's saying ..."it's mine...it's all mine." <img border="0" alt="[laughing]" title="" src="graemlins/laugh[1].gif" /> NICE...

Yes, the wire is just what I expected. I saw some aluminized at Lowe's today and it looked good (and a LOT cheaper) and I "think" it's the very same wire. The company I investigated makes 95% of all aluminized wire in the country as I understand it. This company uses no zinc in the compound. I actually wound up with a 17x10x9 aviary when finished. The wire is really heavy (like standard fence wire.. not the cheap lightweight stuff).

Beautiful - and your property is gorgeous!! How many person-hours did it take?

Is that a bluebird nest box I see?

I'm sure her "Royal Whiteness" will have a terrific summer in her new aviary. What a lucky and thoroughly spoiled girl. I can't wait to start working on ours. Thanks Jerry for all you do for these guys.

I did it by myself with no help, so it took about 22 hours total. That counts the welding time I spent making the door to the aviary. Also, since the back door to my house opens into the aviary, I dont have to worry about transporting to and from the aviary. ( And yes, that's a Bluebird box. I have a nesting pair every year, but not in that box usually).

The flooring is medium sized river rock. It was already there so I just incorporated it. I have a pressure washer that I clean the rock with, now and then. (I'll have to do it more often now).

The aviary faces to the south, which means it gets the sun all day in at least half of the space. This gives Princess the choice of sun or shade. I've been taking her out there for short visits in order to get her used to the new space. I want her comfortable enough that she doesn't scream (call) when I leave. I have a wireless camera with tilt/pan feature so I can see her and everything around her at all times.

Thanks for the compliments smile

As I don't live in or near a swamp or other body of water, I'm not overly concerned. I bring Princess indoors before late evening when mosquito's really come out.

I feel the benefits of an aviary far outweigh the possibility of West Nile. We worry when our children get old enough to cross the street by themselves... we worry when they start driving. But even though we know they "might" get killed doing either, we don't lock them up in the house because quality of life far outweighs the risks .

Awesome! And it should be a consistently nice temperature, too. One question - any problems with her spooking if someone walks out onto the deck?

The first time I went out on the deck I spooked her a little. Next time I talked to her before I walked out. She was fine after that.

Jerry, is there any way you can post more pics of your aviary? I am trying to get these to come up so that I might take some ideas and use them, but I haven't been able to. I did read about the aluminized chain link in another post and decided to go that route, but to see pics of the framing you used and techniques would really be helpful! Thanks!

Me too frown

I have dsl but your pics are not coming thru. I did think maybe I would pull them up and leave then maybe they would come up in my absence. LOL

Sherrel

EDIT:: Nope that did not work. I went out to the barn, turned the horses out to pasture. Fed the cats out there. Came back to the house and watered the hanging plants. Got out something for supper.

I'm assuming the pictures were removed some time ago, as this thread is over 2 years old.

I had searched through old posts trying to find pictures of aviaries and ran across this post. I did know it was old but was hoping Jerry might still have pictures, or I am assuming he would still have the aviary to take new. I wanted to build an aviary similar to what was described when he mentioned the aluminized fencing so when I saw that he had old photos of this, I wanted shots of it. Thanks!

Tatiebug,
I would also love to see the pics. There is however a link someone posted for an aviary built out of a costco carport that is awsome as well.If I find it again I will post the link for you.
