I received an email from a mytoos member regarding my post asking the difference between a sanctuary a rescue and a rehab. I won't post the email to me but I will post my reply.

Dear *********

Thank you for your email. You confirmed what I
suspected of some of the "rescues" in the greater NYC
area where I live. My suspicions grew stronger when
over a period of time I was seeing the same telephone
number in the newspaper classifieds under birds for sale as the same
telephone numbers for these private "rescue" people.
They advertise on the bulletin boards of veterinarian
offices and on local NYC internet bulletin boards.

These unethical people are, of course, resellers of
unwanted birds. My guess is that they purchase birds
from private parties for a very cheap price and then
resale under the disguise of a private person doing
"rescue".

The profit for these resellers disguised as rescuers
can be staggering from what I am hearing. They pay
$200.00 for a blue and gold with large cage from a
private person and then resell for $800.00 to a person
thinking they are paying for the vet bills and all the
stuff it took the person to get the bird in shape. I know that most people are good honest
people when it comes to our beloved birds but we also
know that there are some real nasty people out there
who will do and say and fake anything to be given for
free or buy cheap and resale high a bird.

Thank you for your email.

My DH and I have five birds. Four that came to us as unwanted by previous owners. I am not a rescue, yet, people will call ME to see if I have room or know someone who can take another bird. It makes me so mad when people just don't care who takes them just the "I HEARD YOU WERE GOOD WITH BIRDS." The Birdman from ALCATRAZ, was told to be good with birds.
I have placed budgies with other people. There is a senior comunity near here that allows small birds, finch, canaries and budgies.

blson,

I understand how you feel. It is a shame that folks make a BIG buck for themselves. I agree it is unethical and your post is a big "heads up" for folks in the NYC area. frown

Having seen the atrocities people can commit against each other for years as a critical care nurse in a county hospital...I wish taking advantage of people financially was the only unethical crime folks commited.

It is a shame that good folks have to learn how disgusting and unethical some people are. I understand your indignation and I wish I was still uneducated enough to be surprised. I sometimes really hate knowing all that I know. I would love to have some innocence back.

Take care and just try to remember there are still really great people in this world trying to do the RIGHT thing.

Hopefully the unsuspecting people looking for rescue birds will find this site and get educated. It is working for me.
