Hi. I recently found a lump on my 9 year old toos back. I described it to the vet and she said to watch it for a couple of weeks. She did come out to look at it and it had a bout doubled in 2 weeks time. There is no discharge and it does not seem tender. She wants to do surgery to remove it . Is Cancer somthing that even our young birds can get? I am sick over this and would appreciate of your comments! frown frown frown Thanks Valerie

where on the back is it? It could be a feather cyst. It could be a clogged oil gland if it is near the tail. If this vet it not an avian vet, I would try to locate one.

I agree. This can be cyst or a tumor, which is not unusual (especially in older birds). I'd make sure your vet knows her stuff.

Not saying this is what it is but you may want to take a look, it talks about diseases of the gland and such. Uropygial Gland

Hi and thank you everyone. To be more specific the lump on Gabes back is not where the gland is it is really his back but on his left side down towards the tail but above where the tail feather grow from. It was the size of a lima bean just a couple of weeks ago... now it is at least 3 times the size. The vet is an avian vet. I had heard she was really good and so went to seek her expertise. I do not know what to expect as far as anesthesia and I have heard that operations are really hard on our birds. Gabe is only 9 years old and is in excellent health eats well plays well He does not act sick at all.I am juat so scared! Thanks so much everyone

I would be overly concerned about the anesthesia (again assuming she knows her stuff) as I have my male put to sleep about every 9 months.

Jerry, what is wrong with your male? It must be hard having to worry about hime every nine months.
