So far, almonds in the shell seem to be Hamilton's favorite. I was suprised to find that he liked chicken and cheese. Also, last night we had split pea soup for dinner and he enjoyed eating that off of a spoon (must be reminiscent of his hand feeding?)
What are some other good foods to try?
He did not like the bean/rice mix I cooked for him, nor will he touch apples or carrots yet.
Thanks,
Kim and The Ham Bird.

Hey there! Well, zeeba really dosen't like ANYTHING healthy, which stinks, however he'll eat them on occasion. Seems the best healthy food he'll eat would be raw green beans. He LOVES corn--he wolfs it down like a dog eating would. Grapes would probably be his second favorite. Only the green kind. Then his 3rd favorite is apples. Only granny smith though--only. Basamati rice is good, he likes that. He likes cheader cheese in small ammounts, and occasionaly a spoonful of (fruity) yogurt.

Let me be the Grinch (again) by saying that just like there are marginal parents who spoil their children... so it often goes with parrot owners.

Because your bird wont eat something today is no reason to not keep trying. And just because your bird likes things that he has NO business eating... there's no reason for you to keep giving it to him. Most of our foods are much too salty for birds... and just because he wont die of it tomorrow or next year, doesnt mean he wont die much sooner because of your "love".

I have to agree with Jerry - I have 2 goffins and 1 moluccan - I don't think my moluccan saw any vegetables before I got him - he looked at that dish of veg/beans/soak 'n cook and looked at me like 'whats that??' And my goffins were not big veg eaters either. I would only give them veg mix in the morning every day no matter how much they ate. After a week the moluccan was eating some but not a lot and within a few weeks he would start eating it right away and now eats most of what I give him. The same with the goffins. Corn, peas, bananas, apple, cheese, almonds, pine nuts - seem to be their favorite. The key is don't give up in giving it to them every day - and don't give them a choice of the veg mix AND the bad food at the same time - it will be like running uphill. Eventually he will eat it - another thing that helped - my moluccan must have been fed from a plate from a previous owner because if I put food on a plate and held it up to him he was much more willing to eat - or a spoon too. Remember cockatoos are very strong willed - you have to be too.

Thanks for all of the ideas and suggestions. And, yes, I will keep offering the bean mix - I have a freezer full of it now LOL.
I didnt mean to make that big of a batch, but it will get used. :-)
Today, Hamilton took an apple sliced a bit differently (silly bird) and he did eat some of it. Thats like my 'tiels - they will eat grated carrot, but not chopped.

I never cook with salt as I hate the taste of salt so my diet is pretty low on salt,so anything that I eat cuzzie normally shares with me unless I can taste that is is salty.
Cuzzie loves

Chicken and the bones
Sweet potatoe (mashed up with peas and corn)
Raw Broccoli and cauliflower
gem squash
potatoes
the odd apple or orange segmant
Various nuts and seeds

Whilst we are on this subject,I bought cuzzie some food the other day and it had marijuana seeds in it and I just wanted to know if these are good for them cause i know and saw him enjoying them and NO he wasn't stoned LOL

My parakeet (PP as in marshmallow Peeps) was obtained with fatty liver disease, but during his rehab from seed I found he loves that "Harrison's Mash" high potency stuff. The theory with Mash is that if the food is all ground together, they eat the good with the bad.
Honey Delicious (senegal) LOVES STRING BEANS!!!
When I get to know my too better I'll let you know. I am REALLY nervous about getting her, incidentally. I can't even get a straight answer from anyone about her past.

Hi Kim,

I noticed you have a Sun Conure named Solstice! I had a llama born close to the summer solstice, and named her Solstice! Her sire was named Equinox and her mother was Apollonia.

Shelby doesn't get much of what she "craves", but she does go bonkers when she sees a large pizza box arrive...and we give her a tiny piece of crust, which she LOVES. She also loves almonds in the shell, unsalted peanuts - she unscrews the peanut jar and grabs one!, bread of any kind, luke-warm frozen peas, and sweet potato. She likes chicken thigh or leg bones, too.

Zoe my Goffin Loves broccolli and strawberries and raspberries. Those are her all time favorites.
She will alse eat peas and corn and cooked whole green beans...she will tear them apart and eat the bean inside and drop the rest. She like eggs and 12 grain bread, and just about anything else she is not allowed to have!

Cuzzie: Don't worry about the "marajuana" seeds your bird likes! It is called hemp seed in the animal feed business, and it is very nutritious. It is very high in protein. Canaries especially like this seed during breeding season and canary breeders should offer it. Only certain, selectively bred cultivars of this plant species can be used for "recreational purposes" by humans. The seed sold as birdseed is only distantly related to our "marajuana."
However, the US government is really paranoid about these things. All hemp seed that is imported to the US must be sterilized (usually by heat) so it cannot germinate. Don't bother trying to sprout hemp seeds. Only the odd, "missed" seed will sprout. This is one reason hemp seed is so expensive. It was totally unavailable in the US for a while because the only company that was licensed to process and sell to the US had their license revoked. They could only legally sell hemp seed for purposes "other than human consumption." Someone found out that a beer company was using the seeds as a "flavoring" in the fermentation process (like hops). Well, the government had a cow and we had to wait for another company to get licensed to sell hemp seed to the US market.
Hemp seed is not harmful in any way. Let Cuzzie enjoy!

Neat thread! It's given me all kinds of ideas. Thanks.

I make a grain/veggie mix by cooking a cup of mixed grains (white rice, brown rice, barley, whatever we have) in the rice cooker. Instead of using water, I use 100% fruit juice. Then I mix the grains with a package of frozen mixed veggies. Then I package the mix in quart sized ziplock baggies, leaving enough space so that I can make little 2 inch squares by pressing the back of a knife on the baggy, making indentations. Then I freeze the mix. It is then very easy to break a square off and microwave it til it's warm. That's breakfast.

I also give Baby whatever fruit or veggies we have around. She loves apples, pears,Korean mellon, hot peppers of all kinds, corn, beans and peas. She doesn't like carrots. At Thanksgiving, I give her cranberries, which she loves. Funny thing is that she gets the red juice all down the front of her, so she looks like a slasher bird! eek

As someone else here mentioned [mash], I feed Chuckie a mash every day. It is the best way I've found to get him to eat just about anything he "should" eat as opposed to what he "wants" to eat.

I have several different "base" recipes which include brown rice, oats, organic-seven grain ground cereal and wheat germ. These additionally have a large variety of pureed vegetables or fruits.

To these base recipes, each day I add additional pureed fruits, veggies, dark greens, tofu, hard boiled egg yolk, legumes, etc.in ever changing variety.

There is a web site...(I believe it may have been on "Winged-Wisdom") where there is a chart that lists all the known nutrients needed by our companion birds, (it's like three pages long) next to each nutient is a column that describes the functions that each nutrient performs (ie; supports metabolic, etc.) and next to that is still a third column that lists all the foods that are rich in these nutrients. I've also checked these recommendations against every other bird "nutrition" info I've come across and find it to be consistent, though much more extensive.

I have this list posted on my refrigerator and I use it to select ingredients for the mashes...also taking into consideration the percentages of types of foods (grains, greens, veggies, fruits, etc.) that should make up their daily diet.

What I have found is that in this way, there is literally nothing that I can't get Chuckie to eat when it's pureed and mixed into his mash. On the other hand...many of those things, if offered to Chuckie even in "tiny little pieces" that are still large enough to be identifiable, or large enough that he can "pick out" would never be eaten.

I'm one of these "overly strict" mom's where my birds are absolutely never allowed any junk foods or any of the things they shouldn't eat. Much to my birds' consternation, I might add..as it seems that the minute they realize that someone is eating something that they CANNOT have, THAT is the thing that they most want to sample. Just like when it comes to things you DON'T want them to chew on!! Let them figure out that something is "forbidden" and suddenly it holds far more novelty and attraction than all the other things they are allowed to play with and destroy!!

I've had my darlin' Ana for only 2 weeks now, but her previous owners did right by her - she will NOT touch junk food of any kind - except for whipped cream!!! when she hears the woosh the can makes when i put some on top of my coffee, she goes wild, so i give her just a little. she also had fun once eating part of a lime popcicle holding the stick in her foot.

her other faves are grapes, mandarin oranges, corn and meat/eggs in small amounts.

since she's so new to me and i'm new at being her human slave, i'm still trying to figure out what to feed her. she doesn't seem to like her zupreem unless i soak it in a little juice first and even then she seems to like to just throw it around. she seems tired of rice and doesn't care much for potatoes. make some wild rice last night and she seemed interested in it.

ah the joys of owning a spoiled child...lucky for me i have prior experience with a spoiled human child and also a very finicky afghan hound so this is nothing new to me.

I'm lucky that my Goffin's and conure will eat a wide variety of foods.

Sweet potatoes
Corn on cob
Bean and Brown Rice Mash
Pasta
Squash
Peas
Carrots (slightly steamed but not mushy)
Oatmeal
Yogart
Nuts in Shell (Almonds, Walnuts, Pine Nuts, Peanuts)
Chicken and bones
Peppers
Oranges
Beets
Apples
Banana
Blueberries
Grapes
Fish

I try to always fix a meal that is healthy for both human and birds. Daisy and Angel will eat of the plate and spoon with us. Jasper seems to really observe this activity and sometimes looks like he is ready to jump over and join us. Maybe some day he will take that "Leap of Faith". Maybe a way to a bird's heart is through his crop. If we are eating a meal that isn't bird friendly then we don't eat in front of them.
