Does anyone happen to know of an on-line bird supply that sells whole nuts in the shell (walnuts, almonds) etc.? They seem to be a seasonal thing here at the stores, if it's not Christmas, they don't carry them. I've been all over the place. I haven't been able to find anything on the web either.

Hello.,..

That is problem here too in Victoria,, I have no idea why except that maybe no one else buys much except at Christmas.

Try to find a health food store... it cost a little more, but they usually have some. But usually only organic one.

You should search online for Nut farms.. when I was in california they would sell them right from the farm,.there should be some online. We cannot do this as they have a problem to ship to Canada... Good luck.

Pete

Hey I found one online in MD.. I am sure that you can find one closer... but this was the first one that I saw.

PS... try using www.google.ca for a search engine,,,it seems to work better as you cannot buy your way to the top of the listings.

Thanks Peter! I'll check that site out! Seems so strange that it would be this difficult to find unshelled nuts!

Nuts in the shell are 'in season' in the fall. This is when prices are lowest and the nuts are fresh. Any nuts available after this time are older and more expensive because of the cost of storage.

If you have the space, order 50 lbs of nuts from your grocery store during the fall and store them in a cool dry place in your home. They usually last a year.

If not, check in your area for a wholesale grocer. They usually service local restaurants and small stores and they can often get you nuts but you usually have to buy a wholesale quantity, which is usually 25-50 lbs.

I went to my ask jeeves search engine and found a site called multiscope.com where they sell the pretty bird food. They also have all the unshelled nuts mixed and each kind separately, in, like, 50lb bags. I haven't ordered any yet but I was going to try getting some almonds since that's what both my g2 and m2 like.

oops, forgot to add that multiscope seems to be a generic thing and then I clicked on hotspotforbirds

Thank you Lori! It seems their prices are cheaper than what I just found on a bird feed supply site!
