Hello, I have recently adopted a 16 yr oldUmbrella Cockatoo. The cage he started with is too small (32×24×62). I am trying to decide the best size. I want to go as big as possible for his space requirements. But it has been suggested by several sources that I don't get anything that lets him be higher than me...to avoid hierachy issues.
I am 5'3" inches so a cage that keeps him from being highwr than me would be no higher than the one I have. Seems too small for his happiness. All the more spacious cages are at least 6' height.
How important is it to our relationship to follow this hierachy guideline? I really want him to have space but do not want to cause behavioral problems since I am a very novice owner and want to do the right thing for him.

Thanks!

Ro

I'm 5'3" also. I have 6 foot cages and keep a small step stool nearby. The whole hierarchy business I personally think is a bunch of garbage. I've worked with hundreds of birds over the years and have never seen anything to prove the theory. When it comes to cages biggest is best! Whatever can fit and you can afford is the best one to get. Welcome to Mytoos.

Thanks! I want him to have as much room as possible and found a 42×30 ×70. It just barely will fit...but he deserves it.

We have large King cages about 6 feet or so for each of our galahs. They each live in a castle, but I would not have it any other way. These are their homes and they have lots of toys and perches and can flap their wings and move around well. Glad you got a larger cage....bigger is better!
