Hello! I stumbled across Dewey and saw that she needed help. She had plucked most of her 9-year life and her owner was moving out of the country. She is an Umbrella Cockatoo, I think, and my first bird. She's been here for 4 weeks. She has a 6+ foot steel cage which is very clearly not a forest, so I spend a lot of time making it interesting for her. I've worked with animals all my life, in rescue and in nature, and Dewey is an alien being like none other. This site is amazing...thank you for the reality checks and for giving us both a running start.

Welcome. This site helped us get to a great relationship with out M2 11-12 years ago.

One of the first recommendations that is usually suggested is a visit to an avian vet if you haven't already done so. Thanks for getting Dewey to a better life

Thank you! I spent about six hours yesterday reading and searching (not to take too much credit...I have a slow line). I spoke with a highly recommended avian vet who asked a lot of questions about her diet and behavior and seemed to feel that it wasn't necessary to bring her in at this time (he's an hour away and she was still settling in). It does seem like a good idea to get her in for baseline bloodwork and exam so I'll do that soon.

Welcome to Mytoos. It's nice to see people using this site the way it was intended, by digging around and learning. Thanks for taking Dewey in!

I would like to point out our "stickies". These are the most useful and pertinent articles and threads here. If you open up any of our forum categories, they will be the first items listed and will be marked by a little yellow marker. We are glad to have you and Dewey! grin
