So I adopted my friends 7.5 year old male U2 and he came home tuesday. My friend has a terminal illness and isnt expected to live much longer. My friend has owned him since he was 3 months old. He is better with woman, and has travelled around the world and met tons of people so change isnt a big deal to him. However I do think that he knows something is up (he never travelled with his full size cage- so that gave it away I think). In short; I dont trust him yet, and I have been going very slow with him. The time I had him on my lap he wanted onto my shoulder which I discouraged gently each time he tried. He lets me rub his feet and scratch his head. Talks all the time. Any tips or tricks to help build trust (for both of us), things to try any advice at all?

My last U2 passed away just after thanksgiving and she was an abuse rescue who once she knew I wasnt going to be mean, never mistrusted me, and it was a smooth adoption. I want this to go ok. I also have only had a male cockatiel so I dont have much to go on with male U2's.

Take things slow and easy. You have many years ahead of you. smile. Let the bird set the pace, but keep those boundaries established (like no shoulders). It builds trust and confidence...both ways.

Congratulations!
