I recently acquired a Moluccan cockatoo from a friend, who couldn't keep her because he had grandchildren who were afraid of the bird and didn't interact well with her. She's been a handful so far, and I'm trying to adjust to the noise and mess she makes, but she is a sweet bird who loves attention and likes to be scratched on the back of her head.

Welcome. Olga is a sweet-heart. As for the noise....earplugs. I keep several pairs around the house and in my pockets.

No scratching under the wings and down the back. That's sexual stimuli to them. Head scratches are good.

The Moluccan that resides here only gets going about 30 minutes after breakfast and about an hour before their bedtime.

Something Tut the M2 loves to do is shred books and boxes. He makes a sleeping spot on the cage bottom. Paperback books and phone books are great for shredding. Don't use boxes with tops as this looks like a nest and you don't want nesting behavior to start.

What's Olga's diet like??

Yes, I give her plenty of cardboard to shred. She keeps occupied crawling underneath newspapers too, but as soon as I leave the room the screeching starts...

I've been feeding her a parrot/cockatoo seed mix, mandarin oranges, apples, and celery for the most part. She also LOVES peanut butter and Honey Nut Cheerios (preferably in milk, otherwise she'll dip them in her water bowl before eating).

I think it best to avoid mink all together, birds are all pretty much lactose intolerant. Anything over that the smallest amount of milk will give them upset stomach. You are probably better off giving Olga her Cheerios ether in juice or just plain water.

OK, thanks for the tip. It was 2% milk, so pretty diluted, and she really didn't drink it, but seemed to like the Cheerios soaked in it instead of dry, but I'll start using water from now on. Still learning things here!

You could also try almond milk for a treat for her.

Cheerios are very high in iron, a high iron content in the blood is very hard on the kidneys.

Welcome to the wonderful world of living with a TOO. Thank you for taking her in.
