It's been nearly 5 months, and I finally feel able to write about this.

Beeps, one of my black-headed caiques, and the inspiration for my user name, passed away in June.

He came to me due to a series of lucky circumstances -- in 2006, a woman who would become my friend was driving down her street in February's freezing cold weather, when she saw a lady outside with a kennel cab acting suspiciously. My friend stopped and asked what was going on -- the lady said that this parrot had bitten her one too many times (the last time sent her to the ER) so she was letting him go outside. In freezing weather. To his certain painful death.

My friend grabbed him and despite not being a parrot person, tried to make it work.

But he was ornery, bitey, and, in inexperienced hands, this is disaster. She kept him cage bound for 6 months after he'd drawn blood on every family member. Finally, realizing that she didn't have what he needed, she contacted the parrot rescue where I volunteer.

I immediately scooped him up, hoping that he'd be friendly with my other black headed caique, as they were close in age and I kept hearing about how caiques get along famously with other caiques (at the time, they were rare in rescue so I hadn't had any first-hand experience.) The two of them hated each other from day 1 and, despite my best efforts, the animosity continued for the 8 years I had them both. But, he loved me, and we formed a fantastic relationship.

Beeps was so named because he beeped every 3 seconds or so. He was so playful, learned tricks easily, and loved the playful nature of flying. He was a delight and joy, and there was never a dull moment at home with him. He was an amazing dancer, especially to his favorite bands, and always knew how to make me laugh. He survived my divorce, two moves, and my unsteady emotional state through that. Just when things were settling down, and we'd been in our new home a year, he developed severe health problems. After many vet visits and much thought, I made the very difficult decision to euthanize him. He now rests in my backyard under a special marker.

I miss him every day and wish that he had never been captive. His spunky spirit and delightful nature makes me think he would have fared very well in the wild, especially with the ladies smile

RIP, Beeps. I'm so sorry for the hand you were dealt, but I'm glad I got to spend 8 years with you. It wasn't enough and I still miss you every single day. Fly free.

They are as individual as humans. I can only say that I am glad he found your warm and loving home. There are no words to take away the pain but, hopefully, good memories will be with you for the rest of your life. Thank you.

Im so sorry and know how painful this is. Beeps was very lucky in that he found his way into your home, some things are just meant to be. I too look at my birds and wish they were free, not caged and wonder what they would be doing in the wild. He sounds like he was very special. Fly free little Beeps.

I'm so very sorry. They take a chunk of us when they leave.

Beeps had an awesome home with you and will be waiting for you to join his harem at the bridge. During the years ahead of you every now and then you will hear that "Beep" from an appliance at a restaurant, store or friends home bringing a smile to your face. Soon as you explain the smile to others sharing your stories of Beep the tears will turn to warm memories and laughter. (((Hugs)))

Thanks, all. Obviously, I still miss him every single day, but knowing I made the right decision and that he is no longer in physical or emotional pain helps. I just wish there was something I could have done to fix things. Thinking about fostering someone in his honor.

Fostering one in need would be an incredible tribute to Beeps.
