I suppose that the attorney that represents these fine people will suggest that they are 'just birds'. mad

Gene,
I believe Australia is one of the few countries that do take smuggling seriously.
Will have to check for the outcome...

Aren't they the ONLY country that has laws in the books against the export of their native birds (the ones commonly found in the pet trade)?

Some of these birds were being imported. I hope the law covers imports as well as exports. Too often judges don't always take things that deal with "just animals" too seriously. Please keep us informed. I hope that an activist group over there makes certain that these people are dealt with harshly. mad

Gene, here's a little something from the Australian Customs Service...

The maximum penalty for offences under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act is a fine of $110,000, ten years' gaol, or both.
BUT !!
In July, a NSW court sentenced a 39-year-old Malaysian man to 15 months gaol for trying to import bird eggs inside a body vest.... {15 months} confused
