24/7... this is the time that neglected parrots must be fed and housed. Not just during the holidays...but every day.... 24/7 This is the time of year when Foster Parrots holds their annual fundraiser and once again ALL donations sent in the month of March will be matched by a kind friend of Foster Parrots. During last years fundraiser they raised $17,000 which was matched. The care their birds have received has accordingly been raised by that amount.
FROM MARC HIMSELF:
Last night at around 8 pm a woman from Norton, MA (about one hours drive from here) called. Her Amazon (a yellow fronted, now on the CITES 1 appendix. highly endangered in the wild) had escaped the day before. After calls to the MSPCA and Animal Rescue League of Boston yielded no offer of help she managed to find me. (despite the fact that neither of these organizations referred her to me) I arrived at her house this morning at around 7:30 am and after several attempts managed to hoist a cage up to the branch this poor cold and hungry bird was on. The bird walked straight to the cage and got in. I pulled the trap door shut (via a long string) and lowered him to the ground. Within one half hour of my arrival this bird was home, with newly clipped wings.
I offer this story because I wonder how many people realize just how important an organization that deals specifically with parrots is. The established animal rescue/control agencies are not equipped to help in situations like these or to even house or place the unbelievable numbers of displaced and unwanted birds in the northeast. Although we would love to do more we too are strapped by time and manpower constraints to seriously address the need in just the greater Boston area
This is where you have been so important. Through your donations so much has been accomplished. Not only have over 500 birds
, through adoption and the offering of sanctuary over the last three years, been given a second chance but through our participation with the Avian Welfare Coalition we have been able to work with many well established animal welfare/rights organizations to heighten the awareness of millions of people across the country to the growing problem and to the overpopulation threat on the horizon. If we are to avoid the euthanasia of tens of thousands if not millions of unwanted parrots we must continuously work to raise the awareness of those who might follow their impulse to purchase a parrot without thinking ahead of the consequences of the many life changes that will force them to abandon a highly intelligent creature that has the capacity to outlive them.
