The Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland took in two wild caught Congo African greys from a bad situation many months ago. They are not tame and have suffered too long. Thanks to Echosmom, I was able to provide them contact info for Project Perry in hopes of giving them a good remainder of their lives in the Grey aviary there. They have been accepted and we just need to get them there (ASAP :-) ). We are in Maine and have a ride set to the Boston area. is anyone good at arranging transport or can anyone volunteer some legs of the trip for these poor angels to finally have a good life?!
Thank you for any help you can give!!!!!

I have sent this message to the woman who directs the rescue where I volunteer. She knows people on several dog transport lists and is checking to see if anyone might be able to help.

If we hear anything positive back, I'll get your e-mail from the Admins if that's OK with you?

I'm glad we are able to offer them their final home and hopefully the transport relay comes together well (and quickly).

I'm in the Boston area and could take them to either the MA/NY line at the turnpike or down into Conn. Weekends are best but with a little notice I might be able to do it on a Tuesday or Wednesday.

Tania you will most likely need at least two more people between me and Helen. Maryland I think is close to 8-10 hours from me depending on NY and DC traffic.

I just have a quick question...would it not be quicker and less stress on the greys if they were flown?VS the days of driving it is going to take to rally them there?

I know the sanctuary in Canada here will fly birds from all over Canada to get there since driving there and staying in unfamiliar places is sometimes more stress and hard on the birds than necessary instead of a 4-5 hour flight.I mean it can sometimes be days in different places and many hours being in a car.Just thinking out loud. Not meant to offend anyone.

rukesmom if this can wait till next week i have someone going to ny for business and can pick the birds up and bring them to me. his business will be paying for the gas anyway so we might as well take advantage of that. he is from ny but lives here in va so they will be dropped off to me directly and i can take them to matt.

nancy nelson said he could meet you in the city. i hope this will stop some of the extra people we will need to find to get them here and maybe less stress.
let me know asap

I agree Jan - sometimes flying is the least stressful for the bird. Unfortunately the cost if flying in-cabin (which means round-trip airfare for the human) can make it economically infeasible. I have been on the receiving end of a couple of birds flown to me via Continental Quik-Pak (which means they fly in cargo) simply because time wise it was a much shorter (which equates to less stressful) trip (4 hr flight vs 30+ hr drive) and all arrived safe and sound and talking up a storm. I would only ever recommend Continental because they are the only airline (that I know of) thats cargo holds are climate controlled and pressurized. The birds are the last to get on the plane and the first to get off, and are hand-delivered from the tarmac straight to the baggage claim desk. The downside to flying (regardless of which way) is that the birds must be removed from the carrier prior to be accepted for flight so that the carrier can be expected. If the birds are not handleable and/or are not in extremely skilled hands it can be problematic.

Hi all,
Thank you for your replys. I have been away and handling some stressful issues myself so have let this drop (which makes me feel very nadly too)... Continental does fly from Portland but I always worry about cargo holds?! I am not sure if the shelter has or woulds spend the money, but I can ask....
Helen, is your friend still making the trip or am I too late???

Tania, do you have any updates? I talked to Denise w/the AWC earlier this week and they offered some assistance in getting the birds from Nancy and into NYC, but I don't think Nancy ever heard back from you?

Just an FYI - Delta Dash also has controlled climate cargo. I have had two birds sent to me from California (to TN) on two seperate occasions and they did just fine. smile Cost about $100.00

I am glad everything has worked out. Kim

Excellent news Helen - who is providing the leg(s) from the CT/NY border to MD? NY Mayor's Alliance?

Kim, that is very good info - I did not know Delta offered that and I made a "note to self". I know that there is a stigma attached to shipping, probably a spillover from breeders shipping birds anywhere and everywhere without regard for their safety and comfort.

As I mentioned I was very impressed w/the service Continental offers and when my guys were brought out to me they were talking up a storm and very animated - and both had rough histories as well - as I know you're 2 did. It's scary putting a bird on a plane but if it means getting them into a good situation, it's something to explore/consider.

Helen has been working her tail off on this one! After tons of research, phone calls and determination the birds will be flying to Virginia from Maine at no cost through Pilot's and Paws. I hope Helen doesn't get mad at me for spilling the beans.

thanks everyone. but all in all we all were trying to get these babies home. something just kept bothering me about us not being able to get them here without stressing them out. and god knows how many hours it would have taken to get them here.

i think it's great that marybeth one of the pilots that will do the final leg has an m2 and a cockateil also she said she is very excited about this transport as she realizes how many birds need to be rescued. i really hope she has a little time before she has to take off to make up to the sanctuary when matt releases the greys. at least she has experience with birds and will be able to tell if they are stressed.

and nancy i couldnt be mad at you. you have worked hard on this also.

i found pilots n paws after talking to a few of the farmers out here who have planes and after looking into it i can home wed nite and posted on their site and withing 4 hours had a response with 2 pilots wanting to help. matt just happen to return my call when i opened the email and i had tears streaming down my face and was shaking i was so surpised that this was going to happen.

these folks are truley angels and they work on donations. so if anyone may have a dollor or 2 they could spare i'm sure they could use it.

i'm taking off of work to go up and meet marybeth so i can thank her myself and by the way janet i had one extra coffee mug from the dedication that i will give to her from the mytoo's site if that is ok and i think i may do her a bird house since i have a couple.

i'm still waiting on both pilots to give me the ok that they have the flight plans set and will keep everyone posted as for sure they will be home on the 9th.

here's to PILOTSNPAWS our angels with wings

Thanks for the update Helen - I read the thread on their forum last night.

Here is the link to Pilots N Paws main website. http://pilotsnpaws.org/ There are lots of previous stories and pictures. For those wanting to support, in addition to donations they also sell merchandise to help fund the wonderful work they do. http://pilotsnpaws.admark360.com/

Just thinking about the big day tomorrow for these two parrots. I hope that all goes well and the pilot at the end of the relay is able to see them at their new home. Hope we get some video/pixs.

Yeah, it's a shame that the weather did not cooperate today. They are going to give it a try again next Thursday.

Keeping fingers crossed for good weather next Thursday. Yesterday the weather here was awful. We had bad thunderstorms in the morning that were not predicted and then severe storms with very high winds here from 5 until close to 9 last night. It would have been so dangerous for the small planes.

I spoke with Helen Thursday and the flight had to be postponed due to weather again. Hopefully there is another pilot who will be able to help to give a bit more flexibility this week. Keeping fingers and toes crossed here!

I just read this and I'm in awe of the planning and ideas for getting these Greys to Project Perry. The best bird people in the world are on this board. Thank you.

ok lets see if this will not be jinxed. the plans are to fly the birds out this weekend. the weather looks like it's gonna be good all weekend.

i have been invited to fly with marybeth as she lives right here in my back yard. i'v never flown but i'm excited to go. yooohooo.

there have been sooo many phone calls, text messages and cancellations on this it's unreal mary beth said she has had delays but nothing like this ever. but we are in the months were there are lots of storms.

so everyone say a prayer we are picking up 5 puppies to transfer to the pilot from up north who's picking up the greys. i think we may make it this time. i cant wait

AWESOME!!! Hoping that the next update finds the birds in Louisa safe and sound. Helen, it's awesome that are going to accompany Marybeth and please do me a favor and give her a big hug from me.

Pilots and Paws ROCKS and are a very worthy non-profit organization!!! - which compels me to post their links again.

OH Helen!! enjoy your flight!! (Nothing quite like it, my uncle had his own plane.) This just gave me goose bumps and tears for the grays!! I'll take a stormy day here to keep it from causing another delay for these birds. Hope to hear great news soon and lots of pictures.

ok after 10 hours of flight the babies are home. we ended up going up to conneticut to get them. matt looked like a proud new parent. marybth didnt get the chance to go up to the santuary because it was getting dark on us and she hadnt done many night flights so we had to leave early.

the greys did great no fussing at all not stressed in any manner just pissed off. over all everything couldnt have been better.

i will post some pics after matt sends me his so everyone can see them all at once

and yes i did have a great time and if given the chance to help again i would do it without blinking
