Glad to hear that you finally have a diagnosis and it is treatable!! Keep us posted on how he's doing please and to be safe you should call your health care provider and see if they want to put you on preventative treatment.

This IS a zoonotic disease, but it generally only passed to people with weakened immune systems. We had a case last year, and my employee on chemo wasn't allowed near that building. All staff were required to wear masks and gloves until treatment was well underway. We also closed the facility to visitors and tours for 2 weeks until everyone was being treated. We treated every single bird in that enclosure. If you have any other birds at home, they will need treatment as well. This disease is primarily passed via dander, so you will not want to go anywhere there are other birds until yours is cured.

It is treatable, and the prognosis is usually pretty good. But it is exceptionally contagious amongst birds.

Thanks for the advice there are no other birds in the house or anywhere that i visit so thats ok.

On the other point my wife is a nurse so she,s pretty clued up on what to look out for in us.

Dose anyone know how he would have caught this? i haven't been near any other birds since we had him.

Chlamydia is an intercellular disease. The bird can have it for years, but the virus doesn't become active until the bird is stressed. Then the virus starts shedding, he becomes contagious, and can crash very quickly. The worst thing is that you can test for Chlamydia, and if they are not actively shedding the virus, they will test negative, even if they have it. This is one of the main reasons we do a 45 day iso period. The stress of iso is enough for a bird to start shedding the virus.

Today birdi has taken a bad turn for the worst,
since going to the vet last week nothing really changed.
today i came home to find him at the bottom of his cage wings outstretched and shacking like he was having a fit.

this lasted about 5 minuets although i don't know how long he had been on the cage floor for.

Ive rang the vet to get an appointment but the vet i seen is away and the soonest i can get is tomorrow morning but i fear this will be to late.

at the moment he,s lying on his back very breathing very shallow
eyes closed.
ive picked him up but he no longer has the strength to hold his head up.

the vet i spoke to said to prepare for the worst, its also had me thinking did they diagnose his illness correctly.

Ive tried getting some water to him with a syringe but i don't know if he,s taking it down or just gagging on it.
don't know what to do for the best i have an appointment but not till the morning he,s been like this for a few hours,im suprised he still hanging in there.
just been looking over him and found what seems to be a large growth on his chest.
i cant believe the vet didn't notice this as it must have been there last week.

i know he realy needs water but dont know what to do for the best.

The "growth" on his chest could be his crop. That's where all food is stored until it slowly moves down into the stomachs. If he is failing, the digestion process halts and the crop remains full. Hence the "growth" affect.

The symptoms you are describing are very common for chlamydia. Makes sure he is kept warm. I would not try to give him more fluids yourself, as you do not want him to asperate (sp) any of them.

See if you can find another vet now. He probably needs sub-q fluids and an oxygen tent.

I am so sorry you are dealing with this. It is a horrific disease....which is why I was surprised by your vet's attitude when he did the diagnosis.

You are in my prayers. Good thoughts beaming your way.

Thanks for your thoughts ive been looking for a vet for the past few hours its 9pm here now.

there is very slight more movement at the moment if i stoke his chest he does very slightly try to lift a wing and his eye just opened ever so slightly.

the thing that looks like a growth is more on his throat than his chest.

he hasn't had any water for a good few hours now thats the worrying thing.
the way the vet sounded earlier i was expecting him to have gone a while ago but he seems to be hanging in there.

I am so sorry. You are in my thoughts. You will find a special place in heaven for what you have done for this bird.

I am so sorry.Have you been able to find someone to see him?

I wouldn't personally give him any more of the medication in case he is having an adverse reaction of some sort.Had he been eating normal until now? Is he regaining any strength at all?

The most important thing right now is to keep him very warm... (worrying with everyone else and praying. Sorry you are going through this.)
