Greg: I can assure you that any and all of his records will stay with him. I adopted my Hoodie from Best Friends, and recieved a copy of all his medical records and history.

Greg, I think you are making the right decision. It must be about O now.

Jacque, will you please keep us posted?

We know you love him and the people on this board love him too.

I think you are making the right decision as well, Greg. And he is absolutely loved by you and many of us here.

Yeah, how about it Jacque - please keep us updated. Pictures would be nice too!

Again, guys, thanks so much for being here for O...everyone speaks so highly of Best Friends I am beginning to think it will be a new beginning for O...no longer subject to the whims of well intended but incapable handlers...

This morning Cybil was civil smile I was not sure I was going to handle him at all, but when I talked to him through the bars he lowered his head and I rubbed his head and neck...had to let him out...he ate well, hung for a while and then went back in...I need to prepare a cardboard barrier I can use if he goes postal on me again so I can lock the cage door...

I hope someone works with O to figure out what is really going on...personally, I do not think he likes me, why, I do not know...its a love/hate thing...lately a bit more hate than love on his part frown

Now I am more concerned about logistics...how do we actually effectuate the transfer? I can transport him someplace local for pickup, if needed, although I am not sure how to get him in a carrier at the moment since he wont allow me to handle him...

I would hate to have to put on a glove and jamb him in a carrier, hand him off to a stranger and then subject him to 5-7 hours travel in a carrier without food and water under those conditions...how can we do this and minimize the stress to him?

Greg, you will just have to do what needs to be done to get O into a carrier, and there is no reason for him to be without food and hydration. You can place food in the carrier for him and while having a water bowl obviously presents it's challenges, you can offer fruit to keep him hydrated. If he doesn't eat fruit of any description, his escort will simply have to stop along the way and offer him some water.

Noelle had close to a 20 hour drive to get here. Her former foster dad drove from VA to GA, where I met them. Then we made the 8 hour drive from GA to here. From what I was told she did some complaining on the way to GA, but from GA to here she ate like a little piggy, put her head against the front of the carrier for scratches and not one complaint the entire time.

I've also been on the receiving end of a couple of birds that were flown to me. Each time I was greeted at the baggage claim office (where they were hand delivered to as soon as the flight landed) with jabbering/talking birds - anxious to get out of their carriers, but no signs of being overly stressed. Don't get me wrong, I am sure that the travel was stressful for them and I worried myself sick until they were safe in my hands, but overall they did beautifully.

My birds handled the two day trip to Kanab like champs. They seemed to enjoy the motion of the vehicle and the only time they made any noise was when we stopped for gas.

At WalMart I found that they are now making lock-tight bowls specifically made for crates (carriers), that attached to the doors. The birds had food and water all the way, and the bowls worked like a charm.

If it is going to be a few days before you get things arranged, you have time to desensitize him to the carrier. Start by setting it where he can see it. Then put his favorite treat on top of it, so he has to step on it to get it. Then open the door and put the treat at the doorway. Finally start chucking treats inside, so he gets used to going in and out and it becomes a high-value experience for him. Makes it much easier in the long run than just shoving them in a carrier.

Greg, how are you holding up? I know it's tough. Try to do what Jacque said but there is no way you can avoid all the stress. He will be OK, Greg. They are more resilient than we give them credit for.

Thanks Guys...Denise put my mind at ease, explaining what EM said...O loves apples so I will make sure he travels with slices that can be dunked in water and given to him...

I ordered the carrier and will not have it until Tues...I will attempt desensitizing...Denise offered to come by and help me get him in the carrier...

Things here are stable...I have him out in the am and pm and rub his head but I have not been handling him at all...they are shorter intervals and I think he gets angry at me for that...most times he comes out without incident...when he goes in and I go to lock him in the cage he goes ballistic...

Tonite while out I moved the tree over to his cage to see if he wanted to climb on but he did not, although he seemed intesrted...he has been in the day cage overnight all week...

Greg, I am very envious that you get to meet Denise in person!! She and I have "known" each other for a few years but have never met ( not YET anyway!).

Bev is right, they are more resilient that we give them credit for!!!!

After O goes to Best Friends you'd better stick around and get ABA down BEFORE Buddi develops some problem behaviors as he matures!! OK?

I consider myself fortunate to have so much help so close by...Denise is a god send...

I am sure that the transportation will work out...I just continue to feel like I am quitting on O and can not help but feel guilty in one way, yet hopeful in another...I go home at nite and pet his head and feel like Judas...

I just got the 7 page release form to fill out for Best Friends...very thorough...will work on it this weekend...

Buddi is already exibiting behavior that needs to be nipped in the bud...this aggression in the presence of my wife, causing me to avoid my wife when she is out, is rendering Buddi a 1 owner bird and I need to work on that...

Greg: Please fill out the release form as completely as you can. That is our guide post for how we are going to start working with O. We really need to know what he likes, what he doesn't like, what his favorite toys and food and activites are. We want him to be as comfortable as he can possibly be.

If a bird is used to a certain treat, we want to be able to provide that, at least at first, so that he has that level of familiarity. It makes the transition so much smoother.

We...us...do you work there? I would love to have some one on the inside to tell me how he is doing after he arrives...

I have a date...next sunday some one was already heading out to Utah from Newark and has agreed to transport...all I have to pay is the $100 fee to take him on board...Denise is going to assit me and we will make sure O get through security without issue and is on the plane before we leave...I am so grateful that O has so many people who care...

I am going to send along samples of the toys and foods O likes along with a detailed history and likes and dislikes...I still feel bad but I know in my heart it is the best for him long term...

O is starting to reach out to me a little more...he was out for well over an hour this morning but would not climb onto the tree...I pet him a lot and we sang and played...

He has realized my "trickery" and will no longer chase his favorite food into the cage so I can lock the door...he does not immediately chase but waits for me to walk away...then hs goes in...when I approach he comes out before I can lock him in...eventually he caves due to hunger and when he does he still wants to bite me for locking him in, although I talked him out of that this mornng...

I am going to try to spend a little more time with him later and see if I can coaxe him on the tree...

My parents stayed over last nite and O was awful...I gss I am somewhat desensitized to the screaming but they could not wait to leave this morning! O is the ultimate tool to get rid of unwanted house guests!

Thats amazing! Now I can get updates!

O continuies to dumfound me...after a pleasant morning in which he was out over an hour and I was able to (nicely) talk him out of biting me when I was locking the door, I decided to take him out early for dinner and spend some time with him...

Well, he came out fine...I moved the tree to the cage so he had an option to go on it...I have not asked anything of him (except not to bite me) all week...

So our routine is broccoli, sweet potato (fed by hand)and then we take a break from eating for some fun with music before I use a chicken thigh bone to lure him back into the cage so I can eat while he has his bone, after which I clean his cage. (with him in it)

So he is on top of the cage door eating brococli from my hand...I hold the stalk and he eats the flower...and half way thorugh his entire demeanor changes and I can see he now is leaning and leading with beak around the broccoli...he went postal and just wanted to get at me...again...I was forced to skip eveything and go straight to the bone to lure him in the cage and then had my wife lock the door while I distracted him...

What in the world could cause his behavior to change "on a dime" like that?

I think he is not happy with limited time ouf of the cage but whenever I try to spend more time with him his aggression reemerges and he runs me off...

I know he is not happy with me...but a little while later I am cleaning the cage tray, while he is in the cage and throwing himself against the bars to get at me, and I talk nicely to him and he goes to bottom of cage and puts his talon on his neck and then lets me rub his head and neck through the bars...

Is he Schizofrenic? What is going on here?

Yes, I have been very blessed and am working as the Interim Manager at Parrot Garden. If I pass my probationary period, I will be the permanent manager.

We have many former owners who contact us to check on the status of their birds. And I know the staff spends a lot of time following up with former owners.

We know that you care...or you wouldn't be sending O to us, you'd be selling him through the want ads.

Greg, a breeder would give you a few bucks for O. They don't care what the breeders look like, just the chicks. Real class, these people!

What a face....I so look forward to meeting him!

And yes, some people would try and sell him...and you could probably even find a buyer. But that just perpetuates the problem. Thank you for caring enough to send him to a place that understands, and has done some incredible work, with cockatoos.

Greg, there is no doubt in my mind that O is going to do beautifully at BF's!!! And I betcha he finds a wonderful permanent home too...but if not he definitely will have it made at BF's as a permanent resident!

I know you are hurting. As I have always instilled in my children, sometimes doing the right thing, is very difficult...often the most difficult of all. Life sucks that way sometimes and it hurts like hell too.
