It's great seeing each of you there. Please be sure to send invites to your friends, and encourage them to do the same. Ahhhh the internet is a beautiful place for networking. Just think of the number of people we can "reach out and touch". We have the potential to reach a huge audience, educate others, gather support in our beliefs and help some birds out there too!

OK...I've joined as well. Did you know there is an application you can use called "Bird Book" where you can build a page for each of your companions? Pretty cool!

I'm puzzled....I'm a Facebook member and have joined our FB group, but nothing ever happens there - no comments, no discussions, etc. In fact, the comments Erin and I made have disappeared. Is our FB group only for the purpose of getting people to join this board?

It is a networking platform to educate people to the plight of captive parrots and the rescue community and to show support for our beliefs (our agenda). Many people will only find Mytoos.com and/or the forum if they are searching for information on cockatoos. Facebook users can find us in the Groups listing, as well as our FB friends can be led to the site by looking at what groups individuals belong to. There is also a "share" icon on the group page that will transfer the groups avatar and "mission" to your Facebook page, making it easy for all your friends to find us.

As to why any comments are gone, I haven't a clue. But everyone can feel free to comment or start/participate in discussions. Detailed discussions on the care of cockatoos, should continue to stay here in the forums, IMO. Remember, this forum is an open book - meaning membership is not required to access all forums and all topics. Unlike most other bird forums, we do not have members only, or any hidden forums, forcing people to join just to read. Here at Mytoos, membership is required for posting only.

That would be up to each individual person to answer. Why did you join Pat? Do you have suggestions/comments on what you would like to see within the group? How about the rest of you???

In addition to the networking possibilities and the ability to educate non-cockatoo owners about the plight of these magnificent birds in captivity, I think it's just plain fun to get to know some of our familiar Mytoos friends on a little more personal basis. What a shock to find out that we all have lives and interests outside of our birds grin!

I've been a member of Facebook for awhile but I have to confess I never really "got it". Never had any experience with message boards, groups, online friends, etc. so I joined our new group to give me some incentive and it has worked. I think what I'd like to do is start a discussion about who we are (briefly) and the kind of bird(s) we have. I think that might be fun and would help with finding "friends". How do you all decide who to ask? Or do you make everyone your friend? See, I told you I was just learning
and am a bit confused.

Sounds like a great discussion to start Pat. I'll keep my eyes open for when you begin in and join in.

As far as adding friends, sometimes I initiate the request, sometimes I receive them. When we started the group, as people joined that weren't already on my friends list, I would add, or receive a request from them. That is one reason why I started the Whose Who topic on the group page. I recognize quite a few names and/or pictures, but not all.

I have received friend requests, that I haven't had a clue who they are. If they have a bird in their profile picture that tells me that it is another bird lover, and I also check to see who our mutual friends are - that usually helps. When in doubt I will usually accept the invitation, then visit their page - look at their photos, the groups they belong to, the causes they support, etc. You can always remove someone from your friends list by going to their page and scrolling down to the bottom of the page and clicking "remove from friends" on the left. You can also block the user as well if need be. I've only gotten 1 friend request that made me say outloud "You've GOT to be kidding me!" - I recognized the person, just had no desire to be on their friends list. I figured it was just to be nosey - LOL! If that happens, just click "ignore request".

Another little nifty thing is that you can suggest friends to other friends. Pat, I just sent you a friend request and some suggestions as well.

You're most welcome. You should also review your privacy settings so those are set where you would like them to be.

I keep all of mine (profile, photos, etc) on "just friends". You can also hide your email from everyone. You can also change the settings on the Facebook search so that you don't show up in searches if you choose to.

I've stared a "Let's Get Acquainted" Topic on our Facebook page.
Thought it would be great for us to learn a little about those of us who are not officially "friends".

I deleted my Facebook account due to a virus from a picture link that was allegedly sent by a friend. When I opened it it took over my computer and disabled my anti-virus. Be cafeful what links you open!! I lost many years of information.

Thats dreadful Joe. Can you describe the picture though or the title so we can avoid it perhaps? Its such an awful thing when years of collections go down the pan like that frown

I just now saw this sticky so I decided to join the group! Not a massive Facebook user though, it really gets on my nerves sometimes.

Just wanted to double check if it is ok posting links to the organizations that I know you all support (and I have adopted them for myself as well), on my own page. I want to do everything I can to help this cause. Already had one issue with an ex member of Mytoos for which I am greatly sorry if this caused any issues for Mytoos.

Jan is right - Facebook is an excellent platform to spread the word and share good information with a large audience. Unfortuately, as with every group there are bad apples that like to spread negativity and just wait to pounce on someone new to Facebook and become argumentative. That's where the "unfriend" button comes in handy - lol! If you need help with your privacy settings just let me know - I'm happy to help.

Ok I am getting the hang of Facebook and would like to go as far as I possibly can networking on there. So I would like for all Mytoos members to please send me a friend invite (if you like me of course lol), I am having a hard time locating all of our wonderful members due to the real names used on Facebook. I believe that the more of us who can connect, the more the opportunities to reach out and share important information on not only our precious Toos, but all Parrots. Dont worry I wont bother with silly chat promise wink. I have already found several folks who had birds and were very interested in finding out the facts and truth. I of course share what I can and always ask them to join here also.

So if you wouldnt mind, please friend me on facebook. Lets help spread the word as far as we can together.

P.S. I am Deborah FeatheredAngels on Facebook laugh

I haven't been around for a while. It's nice to find the facebook page, and I made it a point to join.

Yes, we have taken the Mytoos Facebook group to a read only page. For some off reason it's showing on the page there are 11 members and I don't know why...there are only 4 of us (Charlie, Nancy, Janny and myself). The 4 of us wlil be maintaining the page and updating with some links in the very near future.

I really feel this is a good idea. For folks who are needing help, it can get lost on FB. It is better to direct ppl here to Mytoos so the serious questions, wont get lost in all the chat.

Great idea Admin of Mytoos!

That was the reasoning behind the change.Serious issues were getting buried with all the chat.Origninaly our thoughts were that FB could be another venue to get the word out about cockatoo's but it very quickly turned into something we were not looking for "fluff".

For the cockatoo's sake it is best to keep the information in one place.

I agree...plus, I have to admit I can't keep up with both either and I know that this is not a fluff board which is entirely why I love MyToos!!!

Actually we made the group a read only page on Facebook. So there are articles posted on there periodically but the only members are the Admin and Moderators from Mytoos. We don't accept any members to the Facebook Page now.

I just saw this article. I also saw posts where people said they had joined or requested to join. Not wanting to be left out in the cold, I requested to join as well. Now that I see that membership is exclusively for administrators and moderators I realize that I will be rejected yet again. Woe is me! smile

lol dont feel bad hun, we all got booted from the FB page :P. It was actually for the best though, with all the chit chat that was going on, the important topics were getting lost. We can all still chat with each other on our own pages though smile.

since the FB page is read only is there a way to subscribe to it so it shows in my newsfeed on my fb page? or a way LIKE it on FB so whenever new articles are posted those show up on my page? w/out joining there's no way to keep it ON.

I went over there and couldn't find a way to put a "like" button but there must be a way. Check back while I make some contacts.

It's a group so there's no way to "like" - "likes" only apply to pages. And since it's a closed group w/out membership except for the staff there is no way to set it up for notifications for new posts.

Give us some more time to discuss this and see if we can find a work around....the reason we took the group to read only was because it was quickly becoming a "chatter" group and honestly, we just don't have the time to moderate/admin the forum and a Facebook group. But as FB has evolved and many unliked minded individuals have formed their own groups/pages perhaps we should reconsider. For now check back to the group for updates is the best advice I can offer.

We have made some modifications to the settings (thanks to Beeps and her sister for the tips) and everyone is welcome to join the group, and you can then set your notifications based on personal preference, but we have set the page so that only Admin can post.
