One broken one on the left back corner of the cage on the papers. The other is in the food bowl. I think is was Shasta as she looks worn-out this morning. Both she and Ozark are attending to the egg. They are right at 2 yr 6 months old.(Hatch date 5-2006)

Is it only female tiels that you have? Or is there a male in the mix so that the eggs could be fertile? If there is a chance that they may be fertile you can addle them by giving them a good shake and leave in with her so that she clutches out. Leaving the eggs with her for about three weeks or so will help to prevent her from laying additional eggs.

I believe they are both females. Both have bars across their tails and white spots under their wings. http://s263.photobucket.com/albums/ii135/BrandysMomU2/tail/

After the next egg I'm going to put them in hot water for 10 minutes.

Be aware that a cockatiel clutch can be as many as 7-8 eggs so don't be surprised if they keep coming for awhile. Hang in there!

Must be something in the air! I've had 'tiel off and on forever and never had a female lay. My handicapped bird laid one which I found her nesting this morning. On top of that, she stole Twyla's eggs. (Twyla is her Button Quail room-mate). I'm getting a cage to separate them for now.

Carmen hasn't shown aggression towards Twyla but I'm not willing to risk it. Twyla and her sleep cuddled on the bottom since Carmen sleeps down there due to not being able to stay perched with only one foot.

Once she's done laying I would definitely have her seen by your AV. Gotta watch those calcium levels, especially if there are multiple eggs.

It also unusual to see 2 eggs in the same day. Perhaps they are both laying!

2-15-2009 UPDATE: Egg #3. She laid it in the front feeder bowl again. It's a nice clean well shaped egg. No blood or matter on the shell. Shasta's vent is closed and clean. I took an iced tea spoon and transfered the egg to the back feeder bowl with the other. When I put fresh food and clean bowl back in the cage both Shasta and Ozark proceeded to have breakfast forgoing their oatmeal this morning. OK< Grandmother says this can STOP anytime now!

Feb 17, 2009 (Tuesday)Egg #4 this morning. It also is clean and Shasta seems to be fine. Once again I have to move it to the back feeder bowl with the other two eggs. However, Sunday evening I had to separate Shasta and Ozark. Shasta was tormenting Ozark and chasing her around the cage. This is the first time they have not been together in their lives. Ozark sits in her cage as close to Shasta and her cage as she can. Poor baby she is getting more out of cage, shoulder time.

EM: It seems as though it is only Shasta who is laying eggs. Ozark has no eggs in her (temporary) cage. Thank goodness!

Feb 18, 2009 Wednesday 1:15PM-----I just found one of the eggs out of the nest and on the grate broken....it didn't happen long ago as the yoke and whites are still very moist. So we are back to two eggs in the nest (feed bowl) I hope this doesn't mean another egg to take it's place!!

Feb 19,2009 Thursday---Well, there was no egg first thing this morning...so about noon there it was....on the grate broken...it seems as though Shasta had the wrong end of her over her nest bowl. frown That makes egg #5 but only two in the bowl that she is setting on. I hope the fake eggs get here pretty soon.

Saturday (2-21-09) The fake eggs arrived today. I removed the S/S food bowl she has her eggs in and changed it out for a clean one and put a piece of an old undershirt in it. I put all the fake eggs (6) and her two real ones back in the bowl and it's back in the cage. Saturday should had been a day for another real egg. There was none. I'm hoping that is a good sign. Shasta did sit on her large clutch and rearrange them the way she wanted.

February 24, 2009 5:15pm #8 just a few minutes ago...I walked in on her laying! I picked it up and put it in with the others......the moment I did that...I realized it was Ozark that laid the egg not Shasta...so I think I goofed! crazy

Are you sure they are both not laying??? You know one female can give others the "bright idea". Are you giving any calcium boosters?

3-10-09----I believe we are through with the eggs for awhile. It' has been 5 full days since any eggs. Both Shasta and Ozark are eating and playing and doing well. Both are still on PRIME for a while and crushed egg shells. Thanks so much for helping us get through this.

LittleFoot used to lay eggs all the time, almost to the point of being a chronic egg layer. my fr iend thinks she was. But she's not laying eggs anymore. I don't know if it is due to age or lighting.

3/30/2009 @ 3:00 PM egg #5 delivered inside the "nest" this time. Ozark is roosting almost continually. I do see her eat and drink and will take food from my hand.

CHARLIE SAID.....could be 7 to 8 eggs in a clutch.....LOL

OOPPSS, I forgot to mention, a phone call is going in to the DVM on Monday.

Are you moving the location of the cage frequently? Changing up in the inside of the cage frequently? Decreasing the number of light hours? You may need to separate them. Even though they are of the same sex, if they are bonded to one another it may be the trigger.

Honestly, I believe that some medical advice/intervention is in order.

Yeah I think I would be taking her in as well in case she is running low on something.Good luck and changing things up really can help allot.A friend that works in a group home called me a few months ago asking how to get their tiel to stop laying because she was laying every couple of days for months and that is all it took.I told them as soon as she starts laying to change all the toys and cage location and it seems to be helping her allot. It is so hard on these little guys.

9-17-2010 Shasta has a beautiful clean firm white egg, her bottom is closed and clean. Unlike last go around she is setting the egg already and guarding it like a hawk. Ozark is staying at the other end of the cage. I think I'd better buy a cage for her while this is going on. Territory issues are running high. While I'm glad that that their world is right enough for them to produce, I wish they'd find another way to show it. I have all the toys out of the cage (that's how she showed her little hawk) and will move the cage into another room. Time to get the Fake Eggs out of storage.

Thanks for the input Janny and FeatheredAngels.

9-25-2010 I did slip a fake egg in (her nest is a stainless steel food bowl) later in the afternoon of the one egg being laid. To date there has only the one egg laid. Shasta is still sitting the 'eggs.' Ozark is in an acrylic cockatiel cage next to her usual cage. Whew.

Awesome that she has not laid another egg, good work!!! I know I also worry when Lucy starts laying frown. She laid one egg early last month some time and so I started in moving her cage etc. Kept activity up daily and so far (knock on wood) no second egg. Fortunately Lucy never wants to sit on her eggs, but if one is removed she will lay another.

10-10-2010 @ 1600hrsOH SHOOT! egg #2 it wasn't there a little while ago. This was laid on the bottom grate and broken, bloody with the contents on the newspaper. She must have had trouble. The egg looked a bit larger then her usual ones. Her bottom is a little dirty but I will give her a little time to rest and clean her up. I put a fake egg in with the other fake egg and real one. She's still setting the eggs. cry

Sounds like a vet trip should be in order. That's an awful lot of eggs in under a year. I would be very concerned with her calcium levels, also concerned with the large size of the egg causing a prolapse. Hopefully she will stop laying before any trouble starts.

Ok honestly...have you taken this little one to the vet at all since I suggested on September 16th?This egg laying business is hard enough on the larger birds but even more so on the smaller ones because their bodies deplete allot faster than you think. This is not something to be messing around with.My guess the reason she went the time she did between eggs is because she had allot of trouble passing it.

4-6-2009 was the last egg laying....17 months ago...and Shasta has only laid 2 eggs in a month. 24 days apart.

Several of the flock have scheduled well bird check-ups tomorrow. (Last February 2010 I spent $4000.00 on the whole flock having well bird exams.) Shasta wasn't one of them that was going tomorrow because she's sitting on one real egg and one fake egg, but she will be taking Ozark's place now.

Thank you for keeping up with my posts and contributing your expertise and time.

Sorry about that I reread through all the post yesterday without realizing that half the post were from last year. I thought the poor little thing had been laying nonstop since this past spring.
Glad to hear that she's seeing the vet today. The big egg would have me very nervous.
Let us know how she makes out at the vet.

Oh man...don't you just hate this! My little sweetie is back at laying again and I am in the process of moving her around and changing things out again. This is the first egg since fall so I have managed to curb it for a while.I think I am lucky that she has learned to lay in her pellet dish so they aren't breaking this time.Last fall she laid 7 eggs within days of each other because the first 3 broke on the grate.I am hoping history does not repeat itself and she doesn't lay as many at least and is happy just sitting on a couple.

I've given her a plastic egg each time she's laid. She's shredding everything, but not sitting the eggs. I'm surprised at nine days between the second and third eggs though. Good Luck, Janny!

I have my fingers crossed that she accepts the plastic one too.I just ordered a few eggs tonight in the various species I have to have on hand. The last time I almost died when one of the eggs broke and it was smeared all over...uggh.Pretty icky. sick

That is quite a break in between the eggs though.I hadn't heard of that before. She must be ok though.

But keeping your little sweetie in my thoughts too.Best wishes and let us know how it goes.

Fingers crossed it's the only one. I've honestly gotten to dread this time of the year. Good luck

Make sure that you do not have egg binding where they struggle to pass an egg. We lost a budgie and a tortoise that way. Even if you do nothing to encourage eggs, some critters lay them no matter what. If they seem to struggle laying an egg, get them to a vet immediately. However, you most likely will not have a problem as several eggs have already been laid.

We've had 4 eggs this season. Echo laid her usual two and Nina 2.
