Members have been discussing a place to post pictures of bites they received from their Cockatoos. Cockatoo bites are particularly damaging because the beak has a very sharp, double pointed lower mandible. It is not a pinch, usually. A determined cockatoo will lay you open! They are naturally gentle animals and they generally try to communicate with us using more gentle means first. One needs to read their own cockatoo and doing it accurately can take years. New caretakers should never forget that these animals are basically wild and will only take so much before they let you have it.
To start the ball rolling, I want to post direct images of damage done to Marc Johnson of Foster Parrots, Ltd.
. This is a man with over 20 years of handling many, many parrots and cockatoos. He just let his guard down for a minute! The first picture is the wound and the second is the stitched wound. Thanks to Foster Parrots for allowing us the use of these photographs.
Please use links for your photos. I want these two dramatic photos in image form so that people just skimming the forums will get a glimpse of this. If it can happen to Marc, it surely can happen to you! (or a guest, or a child.....)
