Brandy's Mom: yes, I believe the place you are referring to is "Bon Temps Creole Cafe". Still there on Olive Street. Small world!

Friday Day 14 http://s249.photobucket.com/albums/gg220/BrandysMom_2008/

Thank you all for your warm careing posts. Brandy is being a stinker this morning and tried to bite me through the cage. :wall

Just a reminder: Brandy was not nor has she ever been on my shoulder!! when this happened. I've only left the house twice since this happened. You can imagine the looks I get from strangers and those that know me about pass out!! You can imagine the "suggestions" I get when people hear that a bird did this. They just get the "stink eye" from the "right eye!"

SHEESH ! I am so sorry Brandy's mom.. That looks so so painful. Could you explain the events leading up to that and perhaps an explanation as to why Brandy might have done that? I have so much to learn .... If it's too difficult, I understand. Have you been treated by a physician? What did they do for you? I sure hope you're feeling better.... it must have been an emotional blow, too. I know it would be for me.. and I would be very afraid... Again.. I am so sorry.

We are in a rebuilding phase. More on my part then her's. She is being cautious. I neither look nor sound the same. While the swelling has gone down some on the outside the internal is painful. There is pressure on the sinus/nasal cavity and eustation tube. It's like having the head cold of all head colds. When approaching the cage and talking to her she side steps up her perch to the back of the cage with her crest up in alert mode. It's not until I tell her, "I love you, Sugar, Sugar!" a few times does she come over to the bars. I guess not until it sounds right to her. I have worked with her to make toweling a pleasant experience. I hold up her special towel and ask if she wants to 'snuggle bunny' , she will dive head first into the towel, I wrap her up, we sit down and rock and cuddle. This could last all day if she had her way. This is when preening pin feathers takes place. Today while preening it was the towel that preened not MY finger tips. She has so many pin feathers right now that I'm sure she wanted the relief of my fingers, she didn't get it. I'm trying to have as confident touch as I can muster right now. I feel badly for Brandy. I believe she was reaching out for physical contact trusting me and was met with the trauma of hanging off my face, her human let her down again. Dr. Phil, "Will this marriage last?" I hope so..................

Having been on the receiving end of a damaging bite (my M2 cracked my thumb), I understand your apprehension and cautiousness. Speaking from my personal experience, it is true, the quicker you get "back in the saddle", the quicker you will recover - not from the physical trauma, but the emotional.
I know it's difficult when the pains is still so raw...both physically and mentally.

I'm hope, both of you heal and recover quickly.

OMG, glad I have a small RB2. Yes, the emotional trauma is just as bad or worse. RB2s can bite also but not as bad as this. I do not allow them on my shoulder or above, but my husband does and he does get nipped occasionally. When either are hormonal, they will dive bomb us and we have to wave them off (gently). Then they go back in their cage until they calm down. We usually try to distract them with a toy or something else at that point.

WOZERS, theres still some bruising and I'm guessing it's gonna be there for a while.

I wonder if there is something you can out on it to help with the bruising and the pain.

I think those pictures should be on the front door of every bird shop just so that people can see what these guys are capable of.

Hang in there, and I hope ya get to heeling and feeling better soon smile

Oh! Duh ... try some arnica lotion or cream; it's a natural product used to help heal up bruising and soothe the pain ...

Is it my imagination or does it seem like bites or bruises from these guys take longer than anything else to heal? Is it because they are inflicting deep tissue wounds? I have a bite on my thumb that seems to be taking forever to heal and I didn't think it was even that bad.It just seems every little nip or pinch or skin break is an issue. Is there something in THEIR mouths that causes more serious infection?

Deep tissue bruising takes a long time to heal, particularly if it's in areas close to the bone ... circulation is not as efficient if the injury bruises the bone either so would take longer to heal. If you look at the progression of bruising, it takes the body several days to remove the dead blood cells and tissue from even a normal surface bruise, so it would make sense that a deep crushing injury (even over a small area) would take additional time to heal, and the bird beaks have several deep pressure points - it's like getting stuck between a hammer and an anvil ...

I must have missed where you explained what happened.. what led up to the bite? The bird also bit you on your hand...!! Can you point me in the right direction?

Cheers
