In situations like this, unless you can afford to pay the ransom all you can do is walk away. I had a similar problem here not too long ago where the bird was "free" but the cage cost money. I went to meet the bird whom was in horrible conditions and said okay I'll take the bird but don't want the cage. (I have a spare cage here PLUS the cage she was in was a galvanized cat cage.) I told them sell the cage separately. We BOTH knew the cage wasn't worth what they were asking for and they declined the offer. I KNEW I would not be able to afford the extensive vet care this bird would most likely need AND pay for the "cage", for I must think of my flock I already have; so I had to walk away. As much as most of us would like to save the avian world, there are just times it is not feasible as sad as that may be.
