Corcky is a 1 yr and 4 months female Unbrella Cockatoo. She is very voisterous but has yet to clearly speak. Does anyone know when they actually start speaking? And is there a timeframe that if they don't talk by that time they won't talk at all?

Rocco, my U2, will be 3 in September. He has imitated the microwave beeping, and once told me very softly, "you're a GOOD bird!" He only said it once, so I guess I'm not so good anymore. There are times when it sounds like he's trying to imitate things I say, but it's not very clear.

Some cockatoos have a large vocabulary but they are not noted for speaking the way that African Greys or Amazons do. (or Budgies and cockatiels for that matter) I have never had a cockatoo as young as yours but I would imagine that if she was going to speak, she would most likely have said something by now. On the positive side, my beloved "first born son", Squawker Bird, who is almost 9 years old, learns new words and phrases and even sings (badly) all the time. So, I would not give up hope but I do hope you will love her regardless. And, this is not a male/female thing. Squawks younger sister, Tilly, talks when she feels like it and has been know to say some pretty profound things... <img border="0" alt="[laughing]" title="" src="graemlins/laugh[1].gif" />

All depends on the bird.

Kyu was talking at 8 months. Tut is over 20 y.o. and has never said a word.

It really does not matter to me whether she speaks or not. I love her so much! But she seems to hold extensive conversations on her own and with us. We just can't make out what she is saying. Do yours do the same?

I'll bet you're hearing Too jabber. A lot of waca-waca-waca (like pacman) along with lots of movement.

reconsider its suitability as a pet.

Paulie is 3 and says, "Hi" and "Night Night." I've repeated these phrases countless times to him, so it took a lot of time and work for him to learn them. Most toos can learn, if you're willing to teach them. It all depends on how important it is to you that they speak I guess. Choose an easy word to start with, repeat it over and over and reward your bird when he makes any kind of vocalization while you're teaching. He'll get it.

Some toos talk, some dont. Mine says her name, "uh oh," and "I love you."
The rest is just her own jabber and attempts at singing :p

She jabbers mostly when I put her to bed and she doesn't actually want to be put to bed.

I'll get 10 minutes of what sounds like quiet scolding before I finally hear the beak grinding and finally silence :p

I also get a lot of the jabbering. Java will say things like pretty bird, pretty boy, and hello a lot. However, out of the blue he will everynow and then come up with something I do not even know he knows how to say. The funny thing about it is when he does this he will not say the word again. I know one time he started hollering for the dog to "get out", has told the dog that she is "bad dog". Things I have not heard him say it since that day.
