Hi, everyone,

My Jenday Conure has been ill with aspergillosis (diagnosed in July of this year)...been on many meds...those that help are hepatotoxic (toxic to his liver)....and others are varying in efficacy against his white blood cell count creeping up...

My avian vet today considered milk thistle in conjunction with an oral antifungal.

Has anyone used/heard of using this? I did an internet search, however, I'd like to hear from personal experiences...

Thanks,

Sonya K.

Hi Sonya,
No experiece with asper here....but if an ICU unit along with nebulization would be an option for treatment, I'de be more than glad to help you out....
Best of luck with your little bird.

I know milk thistle is recommended for liver dysfunction.

Our newest bird Xylon is on a supplement with milk thistle in it to help support liver function. His droppings are much more normal since switching him off an all seed diet and supplementing with this med. Here's the info off the bottle:
"Hepatosupport" it's By Rx Vitamins for pets. I'm going to post the ingredients (and hope I'm not violating any laws)
Each Capsule contains:
Milk Thistle Extract (providing 80% of the active flavonoid Silymarin... 100mg
Vitamin B-1 (thiamine).......5 mg
Vitamin B-2 (riboflavin)......5 mg
Vitamin B-6 (pyridoxine).....5mg
Pantothenice Acid (calcium pantothenate)..... 10mg
Inositol......20mg
Choline.......20 mg
DL-Methionine(pharmaseutical grade)......20mg
Vitamin B-12 (cyanocobalamin... 10mg
Alpah Lipoic Acid............5mg

"contains a high quality extract of milk thistle along with antioxidants and supportive nutrients to help promote normal liver function. The active bioflavanioid complex in milk thistle, silymarin, is a pwerful antioxidant in the liver and has become the focus of intensive scientific research."
It's too soon do re-test his liver enzymes but his droppings show a good indication that his liver is functioning relatively normally.

Thank you, everyone, for your replies...

By the way, our conure is already receiving nebulization at home...he's in a nebulization chamber (i.e., Rubbermaid container) for an hour each night, receiving Clotrimazole.

We will restart him on Itraconazole (which was very hard on his liver) with Milk Thistle today....I'll keep everyone posted!

See our guys at www.kuykendall.homestead.com

Thanks,
Sonya

You have some new photos, they're great. I wish we had baby pictures. I hope Emmitt is well soon, I know you are doing everything you can. Hang in there! smile

Thank you, Charlie, for your kind words about Emmett.

We started Emmett on milk thistle (in suspension) on Saturday morning, and restarted him on Itraconazole (antifungal) in suspension as well. He is taking the milk thistle twice daily and the Itraconazole once daily. He also is continuing his nebulization treatments.

We've spent close to $2,000 in vet bills since July with him....

I will keep everyone posted on updates...he returns for a vet visit next Saturday.

Update on the milk thistle experience...

Thus far, it seems to be working. His last liver enzymes (taken on Christmas Eve) were within normal limits, as was his complete blood count. He was placed on Milk Thistle as a liver protectant since he's also taking Itraconazole (which can be toxic to the liver).

Please keep your fingers crossed...he's still receiving both, along with the nebulization! A recheck in 2 weeks will be forthcoming.

Also, my cockatoo, Bella is in a contest to win free food...for those of you that haven't voted, I'd sure appreciate your vote...you can vote for her at http://www.beakappetit.com/photocontest02.html
She is entry #23 - please scroll down and submit your vote after clicking on your entry.

This would sure help me out as I've spent a small fortune on my sick Jenday!!! :-)

Happy Holidays...
