I really have been neglecting my photography, well not my photography but the work that follows it! LOL I finally put together some of my favorite shots from last Summer. I will be going home next Monday and should see my first Ruby-throat during the last week of March. I hope to have a picture right away. The first picture in the following album is of a newly arrived hen and she is tuckered out as you can see. The males will get here first.

I did not see one Wintering hummingbird this year. We feed year round and usually have Rufous, Buff-bellied and Black-chins. I suppose they know more about the weather than we do, it was a horrendous Winter here.

Charlie, as usual your pictures are stunning. I must get my camera out and try to capture some of the beauties around here.
.
We have been lucky to have had hummers all winter. They are now quite numerous. Keeping the feeders full is a job, LOL. But I love watching them.

Duh!!!!!

When I saw the header, I thought I don't want to see pictures of a Hummer. They are just gas guzzlers. LOL

Oh you meant, a hummingbird? LOL

Great pictures, Charlie!!!

And those hummers need a lot of gas too. LOL

Oh Charlie - you should be published with these!!! The one pic that is my favorite is where the two hummingbirds are almost in a pas de deaux (or a flying sonata) - in any event a magical moment. I would love to be able to download that pic and print it. It is one of my fav hummingbird pics ever. Thanks so much for sharing!!!!

Charlie - I am sitting out on my balcony and just saw the most weird hummingbird at the feeder. He was light tan on his entire body, black throat, and a bit of white on his stomach I believe. His buzz/hum was very odd sounding too, that's the main reason I looked up, a bit louder and more of a hard Z Z Z sound rather than a soft z. I've tried looking it up and can't find the species - any help?

ETA: this sounds funny, but his colorings were very similar to a barn owl's!

Charlie, what kind of camera are you using to get those pictures. Damn, you are good!!!

I'm just going to send those pictures to everyone and pretend I took them. LOL

And EM, don't laugh, hummingbirds are gas guzzlers too. Or at least, sugar water guzzlers for their high metabolism. LOL

During my research, I came up with the Rufous as well - maybe my memory is foggy now, but I remember him looking a little different. I'm sure it's just my memory or perhaps he was young or something. But, I will officially call him a Rufous hummingbird laugh Thank you. He was a nice site to see! I hope he sticks around.

There are the black-chinned kind too: http://www.schmoker.org/BirdPics/Photos/Hummingbirds/BCHU7.jpg

Although it seems like a lot of them have a totally black head.

I use a couple of Canon DSLRs. The camera is really just a light box, the lens is what makes a good capture. The lenses cost more than the camera, in many cases. cry
