Worming her? She needs to be seen by a professional.

Folks, don't treat your bird at home unless under the supervision of your AV.

Pete, I hope she gets better soon.

Erin, no it is not something you should do unless your vet recommends it for some reason.

This treatment could make a sick bird even sicker and why put a sick bird through this. Please take your bird to the vet.

Penny is not telling us that she is sick... as she does when she feels bad. This coupled with the fact that she is not coughing but appears to be 'clearing her throat', i am thinking that this is not necessarily a permanent thing. She does not yet appear to be in discomfort.

Here in Australia they tell us to worm our birds every 3 months. This involves putting the liquid in her water and she 'lets it out' for a day. They sell wormer in the local supermarket. We also spray her for lice once a month.
Thank you for the advice.. we are going to see what her faeces looks like in 24 hrs.

PS my wife has just quietly admitted giving her twisties... this of course shall now stop

My opinion. If "they" say to worm your birds every 3 months and sell it at the supermarket, I believe it's nothing but a ploy to sell wormer. Who are "they"?

I know in raising animals for meat, the recommended practice is to give worm meds periodically, but have not heard this for pet birds. Giving dogs heartworm meds monthly is standard here. If you don't the risk is very great they will get them.

What type of wormer are you using?
What type of worms/parasites are you looking to eradicate?
Is Penny oustide with access to fresh dirt?

We use aristapet
http://www.aristopet.com.au/
Worm-enda bird worming syrup

All the local bird experts, pet shops, vets and owners say to use it.

Penny has fresh mulch every month or so to play in. She digs around in it and it makes her all dirty and gives her a mustache (hehe).

I have thrown out the twisties and Pennys poo is now normal - no more yellow.
Also i was listening to Penny last night at sundown and she was talking and i believe that she is not coughing but immatating a local dog who barks.
Sorry if i worried any of you.

Pete, Penny and Izzy

Yep, we worry pretty easy around here sometimes. I'm glad she's doing better. What exactly are "twisties?"

Yep, an Aussie brand:

Recently Smiths have tried to leverage the Twisties brand by releasing Twisties Cheese-O's, a blatant rip-off of Cheezels produced by rival company Arnotts, and Twisties Zig-Zags. But nothing compares to the original taste of Cheese Twisties.

Pete,

Please take the time to educate yourself and your partner about the importance of Penny's diet. I recall your post just before Christmas mentioning that you feed Penny crackers - there are much better alternatives out there. The Parrot Rescue Centre in Queensland sells decent quality pellets online and they don't charge a fortune for postage.

Providing the correct diet was the single most valuable thing I learned from Mytoos when Rocky joined my family a few years ago.

On the coughing ... I took a day off work and drove over 500ks only to find out from the avian vet that Rocky was mimicking my sniffles. If he wasn't a bird person himself he may have thought I was just a little mad!

Thanks Rocky we shall heed your advice. Our Penny is spoiled much and so she will not eat the pellets we bought her or hte regular bird seed.. She will only eat what we eat.
Egg, apple, chicken, fish, prawns, the occasional Arnotts shapes(cheese), heaps of Jasmin rice, everything is cooked Thai style of course, whole chicken legs - she loves the bone marrow, and a sprinkle of sunflower seeds every day.
