Hi,
Just thought I'd share a very stinky, scary episode that happenned a few days ago..
Puffin, my RB2, was out for his daily walk in the garden and playing happily all over the yard while I sat and had a coffee (yes - he was unharnessed, he is still quite severly clipped and can only get about a foot in the air + there was no wind, predators etc).
Well, all of a sudden a very offensive smell started wafting my way - my friend was cooking pasta sauce with strong french cheese in it in the kitchen at this time so I immediatetly assumed it was that (though kinda wondered what the heck she was doing(!!).
A few seconds later I realised it was VERY offensive and could not possibly be food.
I turned aroung and spotted Puffin. He had ventured into the garden and discoved a hidden dog poop. I no longer had a pink breasted too but a BROWN chested one!! He had successfully COVERED himself with dog poop and I do mean COVERED. He had a beak full as well and was quite interestedly chomping it down.
PANIC!!!
I rush to scoop him up, the same time stripping down to my bra so I could use my nice business shirt for a cloth straight away(grossssss). First thing I was concerned about was GETTING IT OUT OF HIS MOUTH!!!) So I'm afraid I went about this with gusto using my SHIRT...grossssss.
I run inside and get my misting bottle and a towel, turn the spray into a solid stream, wrap him in a towel (sorry Puff)and start washing him in him in earnest (including spraying water into his beak to get the reamians of any poop out). Poor Puff, he was NOT happy with this at ALL and let me know in no uncertain fashion...when he was clean and soaked, I get on the phone to my AV and tell him what has happenned - he said not to panic and to keep a close eye on him to see if he started acting ill.
I have obviously made a huge withdrawal from the trust bank doing this but I really had no choice. Luckily he was eating and chatting and playing within an hour of the episode and I took him out and cuddled him for a long time that night.
I stayed home the next day to keep an eye on him, he seemed fine so he mustn't have actually eaten much, if any...so...
Lesson...WATCH him when outside the entire time, check the entire yard more thoroughly for dog poop before taking him out (I do do this but must have missed a bit.
Has anyone else had anything like this happen?? I can see the funny side now but at the time I was VERY stressed!!
Anita

Wow Anita, what a story! I was panicking with you as I read. I am sure you will laugh about this one day. It sounds like all turned out okay. Once again, lesson learned. Thank-you for sharing for all of us to learn.

That's gross!!! Poor poopy Puff! Some lemon juice or orange extract in the water when washing will eliminate the odor. We used lemon juice when my parents had a fire to wash their clothes and linens. It did an incredible job getting the smoke smell out. Saved them from buying new.

you must be soooo careful if you take your bird outside. the expression, "watch him/her like a hawk" actually applies when outside with parrots. check youtube & type cockatoo attack. i foget. i think the girl ended up with some stitches. not from the 'too though.
