First I must say it just amazes me how people dispose of their birds...Brandy's MOm, I just read thru some of your post...My situation is quite similiar..Saturday I took in 2 more birds.. A Male Goffin that is approx 7 and is a absolute little gentle man...And the other bird is a female Amazon, she is 28 YEARS OLD! She is handicap though, not sure when but years ago a dog got a hold of her and she has 3/4 of her wing amputated. I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT AMAZON'S! Only Cockatoos and I am still learning with them! Does anyone know of a Amazon website similiar to MyToos to learn from? I have searched for the past few days and can not find anything!
Tammy, Yeah, it's pretty ahum'itty! Your G2 you'll have a lot of help here. As far as the Amazon goes....the night before I picked them up I just kept doing searches on "Amazons" There was a good I guess it's what you call a 'blog' about a guy who detailed his Zon's diet, feeding schedule. I've learned that they are VERY prone to fatty liver disease...keep the diet low-fat. If you want to go to the FTB board you can send me a PM.

PM's are disabled here but FTB's website (For The Birds) has quite a few Amazon keepers. They have a message board much like ours but don't specialize in cockatoos. Their address is:
Brandy - I am well aware of the Cockatoo info here...I have been registered for quite a while, just do not post as much.
If it was not for Mytoos I would of "Cooked" my birds a long time ago! (Only kidding, but I threaten them with it once in a while..) I have a M2, 2-U2's, a RB2, and now a goffin and amazon.. (Not to mention 2 parakeets, 1 tiel, 1 lovie and a Indian Ringneck) My flock has grown more than I planned, but this is it! NO MORE BIRDS!
My mom has a zon and I can give you a few general hints. They are very smart, great talkers, love to eat. They usually don't love to be handled as much as toos and are a lot more independent than toos. That's what I've noticed. Best of luck.
Thanks Mom 2 Paulie...I have 1 question...When I approach the cage, she sticks her tail feathers up in the air and starts shaking and quacking like a duck, this is the only time she will allow me to pet her head or cheeks, and back but I know that could trigger mating behavior...Is what she is doing mating procedure? Tail up and shaking?
It sounds like a mating behavior to me. My mom's amazon kind of quacks like a duck and shakes when she's "in the mood," so it's best to discourage it. Just try to distract her when she does this. My mom's amazon laid a couple of eggs this year. We rearranged her cage and stopped petting her below the neck in order discourage any more egg-laying and so far it's worked. Enjoy your Zon!
Do you know what species of Amazon you have? We are now in the breeding season for Amazons which typically happens from April to June. Amazons are pretty much like Cockatoos in personalities, they either like you or hate you.
Congratulations on your new DYHA ... I've only been owned by Ozzy for a year, so I'm "lite" on advice ... But, I do know that they are very smart and loving birds - on their terms! They are quite full of surprises too!
Ozzy likes to be where the action is, but does not like to be the center of the action.
