I received the following from Marc Johnson (he received it from a friend) of Foster Parrots and he asked me to pass it along to every one here.
Last Friday's (6 Feb) documentary on BBC World Service radio
"The Wildlife Smugglers" http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/documentaries/
was about cockatoo poaching in Australia. Pretty much nothing new, but i was appalled when the law enforcement officer who was fighting the poachers explained that cockatoos are worth a lot of money because "they are cuddly and they talk and therefore make perfect pets"!!! Talk about scoring an "own goal"!! I am sure he didn't mean it to come out the way it did, but feel there should have been at least some repudiating explanation!! I am going to write to the BBC and ask them to set this straight (at the very least on their "Over to you" program where listeners reply to broadcasts) but will try to push it into a half hour documentary showing why all parrots are NOT good pets!! Its a real long shot, but I figure its worth a try.
1. I will name several websites (NLPR, AWC, forthebirds, mytoos) and would like to also name FP - okay with you?
2. if it gets as far as their being interested in a program, would you be interested in working with them on it?
The contact addresses are:
to respond to the broadcast: http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/programmes/over_to_you.shtml
(this should go out asap, since this program is sent out on Sunday about the programs from the previous ten days)
for a story idea for a program:http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/interact/2008/10/081017_yourstoryinfo.shtml
(less urgent - they take their time on this!!)
