As Cookie comes out of his shell, he keeps surprising us with his chatter, vocalizations and some unique sounds too. I've searched online about a particular blood curdling noise he occasionally makes in the morning and haven't found much info on it except this insert:

"There is a particular call that I have personally heard only a few times from cockatoos during the night. It is the one that without fail sends chills down my spine, and causes me sit straight up in bed, wondering if T-Rex is about to crash through the walls. As yet, I have been unable to determine the exact cause of this unique outcry"

Now, I am going to try and explain this eery cry best i can.... it sort of sounds like what you would think a teradactyl would sound like as it flew by or better yet, a very scary ghost in a horror movie! It's super creepy! I can't mimick it myself but the closest i get is inhaling deeply and not letting the oxygen in as i do it - now times the volume by 10.

Anyone here know what I mean?!

Boy do ever! I took in a cockatoo 2 years ago ( former owner couldn't stand the noise!) and we refered to some of her sounds as Jurassic Park noises! She just didn't get out of her cage much and she was very vocal about it. She has more out time here, and only makes the noise at mealtime and during the dusk Awk Hour.

I reccomend earplugs it helps quite a bit!

Oh my gawd... "Jurassic Park" noises... YES, that is what it sounds like! It actually makes the hair on my neck stand up! Creeeeepy. I'm feeling a little better that someone else knows the noise!

Yep, Peaches would do that also. When I listened to the Too scream here when I joined mytoos I was surprised that it was not as 'full-bodied' and of 'wake the dead' intensity that Peaches was famous for.

She also has this one note worst sound in the world, up in par to the nails raked across a blackboard sound.

Cookie is a Triton, huh? I know we had a discussion a while back about noises and I know our GSC2 never sounds at all like the Mytoos preamble. Apparently, sulphurs, and maybe Tritons, have considerably different vocalizations. Our bird can make some weird sounds and I think I recognise the one you're talking about.

It was Halloween, are you sure Cookie isn't a Pteradactyl in a Cockatoo suit? wink

Marie & peaches,

So you know the sound I mean then! Isn't it scary?! I think they should use cockatoos for voice overs for the screams of ghastly ghouls in horror flicks! I couldn't believe it when i heard it, i honestly was a little unerved by it...until right afterwards he happily cooed in his perfect baby voice, "Hi Cookie"! Then I knew he wasn't overcome by spirits. Hehehehehe.

My sweetheart whose is a hybrid and has triton in him is able to make screams that can wake the dead! And as he matures they are becoming louder! Hard to believe but I should tape him so you could appreciate the sound!!!!

After one of those devil screams I knew someone had not switched Peaches with the bird from hell because she laughed as if to say, "Did you hear that, that was cool, gotta do that again".

LOL Ladyhawk. Cockatoo screaming is music to my ears too! If they weren't yelling I'd know something was wrong with them. And I love the way my house sounds like a jungle with six birds yelling that they are glad to see me when I get home from work. I swear that on Halloween we definetly didn't need any haunted house noises at our house!

Are you sure "THEY" don't use cockatoo scream recordings in horror movies? Or in Jurassic Park, for that matter?
I've heard one too scream in "real life"; he belonged to someone I knew years ago. He mostly hollered when (a) she was on the phone and he felt that the receiver was "cuddling" where he belonged, (b) company was over and he felt he wasn't the center of attention, or (c) he had something to tell somebody, and needed to do something similar to "hey, you!" It always surprised me that the bird's own human was less tolerant of the noise than I; I enjoyed it. (Yeah, okay, and I'm certifiable.)
Sounds like you were homesick for your birdies, Wishfull.

We call it "THE SOUND", a mix of chalk on a blackboard, a jet engine and 1000 babies all being tortured at the same time. Anyone comtemplating the purchase of a too should be required to listen to "THE SOUND" for at least 5 seconds so that they know they will never be capable of tolerating it for one more second.

I am never without earplugs close at hand. My M2 was as mute as a stuffed animal when he was temporarily living in a pet shop ( I begged the owner to give him to me as he is a severe plucker and nobody would buy him..the owner said he was HOPING I would ask for Tara but didn't have the nerve to ask me) But now that he is living a relatively normal life(as normal as a captive too can hope for) he has become VOCAL!!! And never have I heard such a variety of prehistoric screams!! I know he must be happy now. I love it! With ear plugs that is....lol :p

Well I feel extremely lucky. Casper is, I think, really quiet. He makes loud noises but only screams on occiasion.

The noise I would like to know about is a very quiet one. Think about a squeaky hinge then turn the volume down. He never does it while anyone is in the room with him. If we stick a head into the room he is in. he turns to look at us like "What noise?".

Here's my scream story, I thought you all could use a good laugh, or two.
Here's the first....Anthony came into my beroom and we started talking about how we can understand many of Jennie's different sounds. I said "yeah she will srceam to call you back to her when you leave her at first and if she hears me talking in the hall" and he said "yeah it's like she's calling you". My boyfriend who'd been listening to the conversation stated he hadn't ever heard her scream confused . We both looked at him with surprise eek and I asked how can he not hear her? I said "I don't know" and we both laughed. A little later I went into the hall and call my dog's name and when Jennie heard my voice she began to scream so I went into the bedroom and said do you hear her now? He said "no" so I said you must be deaf to which he responded no it Michael blowing his nose that's drowning her out. To which I replied that's not Michael blowing his nose that's Jennie screaming. eek My youngest son has bad allergies and never takes his meds so he walks through the house all day blowing like a horn. He has done this for years now. I later found out the my daughter thought that Jennie's screaming was Michael blowing his nose too.

The other happened two days ago you see we have three cats and 1 I know would never harm or even bother Jennie, 1 that we know must be watched at all times and 1 that was on the fence. We has been working his way closer and closer. Well the other he waltzed into the room and made himself comfortable on the floor in front of her cage. She was on top. She waited for him to get good and comfy and then she made the most god awful sound we have ever heard. eek I don't think that his feet touched the ground until he'd cleared 2 flights of stairs and found refuge behind the litter box. Anthony and Michael laughed so hard they could breath. now he makes sure to keep at a healthy distance.

When I brought Roxy home I knew next to nothing about cockatoos, so I'd never heard of "displaying" or screaming. The first day he was settling down for the night, sitting on the perch in his cage. I thought to myself this might be a good time to try to teach him to talk - and teach him to boost my ego at the same time. So I started saying, "Walter's handsome, Walter's handsome." Immediately he started bobbing his head up and down wildly and making sounds that sounded like VERY LOUD, hysterical, almost demonic laughter.

I don't know what hurt more, my ears or my ego.

Walter

I know exactly the sound your speaking of. Our citron does it daily. It's a chilling, bone rattling screech. I'm so glad he only does that screech once in a while. eek
