Hello Everyone,

Well, I finally had about 30 minutes to myself last night so I searched out the message board and surfed on over.

Forgot my password so had to email admin who promptly took care of my request and now I able to login with my original username and account.

Just to update, we had twin children born January 2003, and it has been a heck of a ride. Things just never seem to get easier, first colic, then sickness, now teething....both of them waking the other up at night. confused

But I think we are getting used to only having two hours sleep a night. Maybe we can catch up when they are older.

Our Cockatoos have adjusted wonderfully to having the kids and it is interesting to see how they interact. Our M2 speaks to them in English every time she sees them, one day they will answer her. Our LSC2's just give them a wide berth as they transit the floor searching us out. Our TAG is busy trying to imitate every sound that the kids make, which now a days keeps him busy all day (he is almost 15 years old now and the learning just never stops!).

Add to this moving to a new smaller house closer to our boat, and changing careers for me and it has been a very busy year. Miriam is back at her work full time and we split shift with the kids at home. It works out well for our birds because they are never at home alone. I even take two of the birds to work with me on occasion.

Glad to see that the old gang is still around. I suppose we have a lot to catch up on.

Happy New Year Everyone!

Peter & Miriam

Welcome back Peter and Miriam!

I have often wondered how things were going with newborn twins on the way, and now they are almost a year old, how time flies :-)

Thanks for the update, looking forward to seeing some pics of the babies (hint hint). wink

Do you have any idea how nice it is to see a post that is so wonderfully casual about having babies and birds at the same time. And twins on top of that. I get so sick of reading posts about people who want to dump their birds because they are having a baby, or going to college, or got a new boyfriend. Is a sense of responsibility a thing of the past?

Glad to meet you, Miriam and Peter. My name is Bev. I live in Toronto with Sally and Zazu. Zazu is an 8 year old goffin and Sally is a 3 year old CAG.

Well hello Bev,

Nice to meet you here on the board, and greetings Mona! Miriam was most pleased to see that you are still busy around here.

Bev, we just take life with a sense of reality and common sense. Jerry and the rest of the people on this board have helped us answer a lot of questions about our 'Toos, and the rest we just used a "little common sense".

I doubt that it is perfect, but it works for us and our flock.

We do not "dote" over our twins or our birds. All of them can be absolutely wonderful, or absolutely maddening all at the same time. We both work full time out of the house, I sail race through-out the year with our race boat and we both try to sneak as much family time inbetween all the other events. I am sure that it will get easier as the kids get older, but this past year sure has been a challenge.

As I type this I have both my M2 and my LSC2 sitting with me, and I can hear the kids downstairs with the wife. They are calling "ma ma ma ma, da da da da" and giggling with their mom.

Now the M2 is conducting flying lessons on the chairback much to the protest of my LSC2. Both the TAG and the other LSC2 are just watching with a marginal amount of interest. Five minutes before this, the wife and I were on the couch with all 3 Cockatoos, eating snacks and watching "The Matrix Reloaded" but then the babies woke up. That is why they put "pause" buttons on DVD players.

So here I am at the computer....with a few free moments to myself. One thing about having birds and kids, you NEVER truly have a moment all to yourself. But, I signed up for it.

Hello Peter & Miriam! my name is Linda, i live with 7 Too's & a TAG, and one husband.
i just wanted to greet you, and to agree with Bev, how nice it is to see people with children AND birds. i'm sick of the same things she is.
i was never able to have kids, and as i'm past the age of worrying about it, i feel safe with a couple of these "problem Too's" around here. i wish people of child-bearing age would THINK!
if i had kids, i might have a few less birds, but i would definitely still have them.

Hello,
Wow! You guys must be busy! It makes me glad also to see that you kept your birds and your kids..lol I have a TAG and a Goffin and am due to have my first child this May. I have never thought once about giving away the birds because of my baby and even though I know it is going to be hard I have the next few months to continue preparing for what is ahead! Congratulations on the babies and thumbs up to you and your wife for being such good sports!

Jenny,

I just replied to your other post, please check it out and drop us a line. I think we can understand what you are going through! laugh

Congratulations!!! The house gets infinately more interesting with both birds and kids in the house. Miriam also has friends with Amazons and new babies. It can be done, it is not THAT difficult.

Just think of how the kids are going to react when they get to school age and find out that not EVERYBODY has a house with birds that talk & eat at the dinner table....It is going to be interesting.

Look forward to talking with you!
Pete & Miriam

Hi Peter and Miriam. Welcome back. I have 1U2, 2 tiels and 2 keets and 2 teenage kids. I had birds long before I had the kids. Like you, I have found with diligent parenting of both, kids and toos can live together in harmony. It takes commitment and a lot of work but well worth the effort.

I am looking forward to your posts.

Hello Everyone! It is good to be back! I hope that our avitar will work, it is one of the twins that was taken a couple of months ago.
If you want to see photos of the twins go here:
David and Emily\'s page

All the birds are now used to having 2 little ones around and will get quite upset when they cry. Jazz has turned out to be a real "mother hen"! She keeps a close eye on the kids.

Hugs!
Miriam

Wow, I'm like a repeat of Gilligans Island I guess.

Hopefully a mod or administrator can help me activate my original username of 3toos, as you can see we have been members here since 2002. But life gets in the way of having any free time. We have checked in many times but lost our password. Emails to the admin just bounced back so we re registered.

Quick update, we still have our cockatoos, and we still have our twins. We have not tried to re home any of them but honestly I'm tempted to with the teen age boy sometimes. Lol.

As some members may have heard, the World Parrot Refuge in Coombs BC on Vancouver Island closed its doors this year. The SPCA was not able to deal with the almost one thousand (yes that's right) birds left abandoned.

Greyhaven from Vancouver BC was asked to help, and they are working unbelievable hours to get this resolved. They found flocks for all the small birds but were left having to find homes for about 550 Parrots, macaws and cockatoos. Many with very special needs.

Our family decided to get involved, and we took in four cockatoos. Last weekend we welcomed Gigi our new Moluccan, Franky and Romeo, two umbrella cockatoos and one very fearful little Goffins cockatoo.

A week later the little Goffins is out of his house. Flying around the teenage girls room and enjoying her company drawing on her iPad, playing her guitar, singing and doing teenage girl stuff, all while he sits on his perch in the sun eating bananas and treats.

Two of the other three have adjusted amazingly fast, but one U2 is having a harder time of it.

That's partly why we are going to be back here a lot more often. I know that the base of knowledge here is better than anywhere and we can get real advice.

I hope someone can give me some "Coles Notes" on what is going on around here these days. I see many familiar names, so obviously a few of the original people are still here and active. Thank you so much for keeping this tremendous resource available.

We look forward to reconnecting with you, and meeting some new friends as well.

Welcome back to Mytoos. I've sent word to see if we can get your original name back in action for you.
That was a huge undertaking for you and your family. Best of luck and I think that those toos are the very lucky ones. Very sad story up there. I'm happy that it's being rectified now.

Thank you, and really so nice to see you still here!!

The re homing is far far from over, they still have a LOT of birds to find qualified homes for. But at least for our four, this absolutely terrifying ordeal is over. As I type this Romeo one of our U2s is sitting on my lap watching the computer. She just awoke to a night terror, and thankfully watching the computer broke her out of her screaming cycle.

I really had no intention of trying to rehome four cockatoos, we were going to adopt one, maybe two. But what can you do? You have to do SOMETHING, so we did this and I'm really glad we did. To see them enjoying dinner and settling in for the evening with preening on my lap then moving on to the grindy beak stage of getting ready for sleep really makes it worthwhile.

Gigi, Frankie and Romeo. Three of our new additions.

Sorry people, it's been so long since I have used a message board that I have forgotten how to add photos. Now that's embarrassing. Lol
