I Will Lend To You for Awhile

Posted By: EchosMom

I Will Lend To You for Awhile - 07/17/09 02:23 AM

"I will lend to you for a while, a bird", God said.
For you to love him while he lives and to mourn for him when he is dead.

Maybe for twelve or fourteen years, or maybe for two or three.
But will you, till I call him back, take care of him for me?

He'll bring his charms to gladden you and should his stay be brief,
You'll always have his memories as solace for your grief.

I cannot promise that he will stay, since all from earth return,
But there are lessons taught below I want this bird to learn.

I've looked the whole world over in search of teachers true.
And from the folks that crowd life's land, I have chosen you.

Now will you give him all your love; nor think the labor vain;
Nor hate me when I come to take my lovely bird again?

I fancied that I heard them say, "Dear Lord, thy will be done,
for all the joys this bird will bring, the risk of grief we'll run."

Will you shelter him with tenderness?
Will you love him while you may?
And for the happiness you'll know forever grateful stay?

But should I call him back much sooner than you've planned;
Please brave the bitter grief that comes and try to understand.

If, by your love, you've managed, my wishes to achieve,
In memory of him you've loved; be thankful; do not grieve.

Cherish every moment of your feathered charge.
He filled your home with songs of joy the time he was alive.
Let not his passing take from you those memories to enjoy.

"I will lend to you, a Bird", God said, and teach you all you have to do.
And when I call him back to heaven, you will know he loved you too.

I came across this poem today tucked away in one of my desk drawers and wanted to share.

I have loved this poem from the first time that I read it. It always makes me tear up. I grew up on a farm with animals of every size and species ( something like a zoo hehe), and loved them all. However, none of them have ever touched my heart, the way birds have. The most delicate of creatures, with so much love and trust to give. I truly believe they are little feathered angels sent from heaven.

My birds and beasts, so many of them in almost 63 years, have all been teachers; because my parents taught me that I was created in the Image of God, and that He cares for us, I learned, from the creatures in my life, how to behave as a caregiver/nurturer/shepherd/lored to them. The blessing has been great; I understand God's character far better than I could have without them. I'm hoping, anticipating, meeting them over there, and looking forward to forever in the Kingdom with the Creator and His artwork!

Hi all. Actually this poem was written by an English author in 1881. Edgar Guest, one of my all time favorite poets, he was known as the peoples poet as he composed poetry that many ordinary people could relate to. I believe it was written at that time as the mortality for children was very high. Here it is as originally written:

To all Parents
Edgar Guest
"I'll lend you for a while a child of mine," He said.
"For you to love the while he lives and mourn for when he's dead.
It may be six or seven years, or twenty-two or three,
But will you, till I call him back, take care of him for me?
He'll bring his charms to gladden you, and should his stay be brief,
You'll have his lovely memories as solace for your grief."

"I cannot promise he will stay; since all from earth return,
But there are lessons taught down there I want this child to learn.
I've looked the wide world over in My search for teachers true
And from the throngs that crowd life's lanes I have chosen you.
Now will you give him all your love, not think the labor vain,
Nor hate Me when I come to call to take him back again?"

"I fancied that I heard them say, "Dear Lord, Thy will be done!
For all the joy Thy child shall bring, the risk of grief we run.
We'll shelter him with tenderness, we'll love him while we may,
And for the happiness we've known, forever grateful stay;
But should the angels call for him much sooner than we've planned,
We'll brave the bitter grief that comes and try to understand
