Your cockatoo's favorite music

Your cockatoo's favorite music - 07/25/14 12:58 AM

Does your cockatoo like to listen to human music? If so, how does he/she show her appreciation for the music?

Is your birds taste in music wide or narrow. Does your bird have a favorite style of music? Such as most 80's dance music. Or, does she only have a few songs or artist she likes. Does she respond anytime music is played? Or, she only respond when she is in the mood for music?

Mine either listen to the TV talk shows, classical, or country. When they listen to any music that has heavy drums or squealing guitars they get wound up and I have to leave the house till they calm back down.

My birds prefer music that has a strong beat and is lively. Jungle Love by the Steve Miller Band and the Cha-Cha Slide are 2 favorites.

Heck I like the cha cha slide...lol

My guys like anything with a catchy beat. Beatles, blurred lines, buck cherry, credence Clearwater revival, the list goes on. They like it all! We dance allot around here. Thank heavens I have them to blame so people don't think I'm nuts dancing around the house and screened in porch lol

Cassie loves to dance so pretty much anything with a good beat. She especially enjoys blues, hip hop and country. I can ask her if she wants to listen to music, she answers by making a clicking noise while lifting her foot. This is her imitation to finger snapping. One of her favorite activities is going outside to listen to "tunes". Tunes are played on my husbands motorcycle. She does know the difference.

Scooter dances to Rock, Country, and Pop. He gets really animated to anything with a good beat. I think the Eagles are his favorite band.

He tries to sing along (off key) to classical and jazz.

He doesn't act like he likes Rap, he just starts arguing loudly when it comes on.

Metal is hilarious. Instead of dancing he starts head banging.

Love the motorcycle bit. Scooter loves the motorcycles too. He tries to imitate them. I've considered taking him for a ride by securing the Wing-a-Bago to the sissy bar. He gets upset that I let my service dog ride, and tries to invite himself. "Good Bird. Wanna go." He occasionally is allowed to come on car trips when I won't have to leave him in the car.
(I have a custom seat on my Harley that keeps the dog secure.)

I think Cassie would love to go for a ride on the bike also. Anytime she hears a bike she starts yelling for my husband. He has a stereo system on the bike and programed songs. She loves sitting in the driveway listening, dancing and yelling hi to anything that happens to come by.

So, would you say that most of your birds respond to the music most of the time they hear it? Or would you say that they will ignore the music unless they are in the mood for music?

Scooter responds to music MOST of the time. When he is "in a mood" or pouting, it takes some encouragement and/or a more time.

Of course, if the music matches his mood he'll pick it up quicker. wink
When he's in a loud and obnoxious mood I'll let him head bang and squawk to Metallica or Ozzy. After a bit I can switch to something upbeat and he goes along with it.
Sometimes he gets in a mode where he just wants to babble in an argumentative tone... mostly gibberish with a few words (not necessarily nice ones)thrown in. It drives my husband nuts. If I queue up a long rap song and let him vent, I can usually get him dancing and happy if the next song is pop or country with a good beat.

I'm not a rap fan myself, but I admit to keeping a few tracks on my phone just as a means to manipulate the bird.

Cassie is all the time unless she doesn't like the music. She will even stop dancing mid song if the song changes tempo.

I find if the radio is on all the time and the music is going consistent they tend to ignore it and the response is minimal. If I crank up the iTunes with our favourite mixes and get some cleaning and dancing happening that's when they respond most. The rest of the time it's just a background noise. We always seem to have music going though. It depends on the volume and our excitement and reaction as well I believe.

Mine is a classic rocker Too. She likes anything that has a heavy beat. We watch a lot of Axis TV concerts.

As a musician,I have always been fascinated by Nadia's great sense of rhythm. She can always find the pulse in any kind of music, whether Hip Hop or Mozart.
I've heard that Cockatoos have a low frequency sensor in their knees that may warn them of approaching predators, that could help them to latch on to drums and bass notes.
While I have discovered that Nadia is definitely a 'jazz dancer' (give her a drum solo by Ed Thigpen,Buddy Rich,or even Gene Krupa and she is amazing!) But when she is not doing her Isadora Duncan impression, she also listens to music intently when there is no 'danceble rhythm'.Just the other day we listened to the second movement of Beethoven's 7th Symphony, essentially funeral music, and her somber, focused listening, punctuated by the slow rise and fall of her crest was impressive.

So,at least in Nadia's case, she can dance, but she also listens.
But,don't ask her to sing, can't carry a tune in a bucket,or a bathtub for that matter.

John and Nadia grin cool

Our M2 really enjoys the Kenny G greatest hits. I can play that for her and within a few minutes she'll be one footin' it with feathers covering her beak and nods off. She also loves the power ballad divas Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston and Adele. Although one day I played Mariah Carey High notes compilation on youtube (a lot of high note whistling). Rosie later repeated it that evening so we won't be doing that ever again! She does figure 8's with her head and neck to one of her favorite songs - I'm every woman by Whitney. She may have other taste in music I just have to experiment and change the station more often.

Hank Williams, Jr., hands down! My G2's favorite song, the ONLY song that makes her jump, fly, spin, bob, & weave all at the same time? "ALL My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight". I don't know what it is about that particular song that makes her "crazy dance", as I call it, but it is HILARIOUS!

Petey goes nuts when he hears the song 'Ride to the City' by the Lemming Shepherds. There's something about that song that really perks him up.

Classic piano pieces make our cockatoo comatose. LOL

Amen to that Nancy....Charlie's classical music might just slow Harry down a bit. LOL

Otherwise, my RB2s seem to like Earth, Wind, & Fire and music from the 60's and 70's cause that is what we play and they do not have a big choice. I just think they like to hear sounds that let them know their flock is around.

On another animal and music...I had pet turtles when I was in grad school...I liked the music of that era (60's & 70's) and played that and the turtles seemed to move around a lot....I told my roommate that they liked my music better than hers (classical music) because they were "dancing" to it...she told me they were just trying to "escape the music"...actually they might have been responding to the vibrations which were more for my kind of music.......go figure.

I am fostering a lesser sulphur crested. Her favorite is Ralph Vaughn Williams "Variations on a Theme of Thomas Tallis." It is ravishing. She also likes his "The Lark Ascending" as well as the Bach Badinerie and some Mozart. She can whistle a bit from Mozart's " Queen of the Night" aria from "The Magic Flute."

I have also played some popular music for her, such as Pharrell Williams' "Happy." but it doesn't make her as relaxed and happy.

I want her to be relaxed and happy above all. So I will continue to explore among similar sounds to which she responds well.

Mine loves classical piano. She clicks and makes happy chirp sounds. Also, I am not allowed to play the piano unless she is on my shoulder while I am doing it. She also likes to walk along the keyboard and explore the keys.
