French galah and umbrella kktoos

French galah and umbrella kktoos - 02/08/13 07:18 PM

I re-write my answer to Eliott hereunder in order to not continue to post on my présentation

Eliott said me that it's not safe for my birds to live in the same cage (to sum up)
............................................

Thank you for your opinion and experience with your goffin. Is it a male ?

I know that my toos are young, that's the reason why we would like to build a little aviary in our house.
We have place enough to plan 6m2 with an aviary in our living room. But not now, in 2 years. I manage a little company and have no time enough yet to take time for this building. I'm always thinking of it... My toos health is always in my mind -)
Sacha, my umbrella will not be mature before 2-3 years. I would like to think that i have a little time... I try to do my best.

I understand very well what you're saying.
It's not easy. I would like to offer male buddies to my 2 females but I don't think that i will be able to manage the male aggressiveness to female. Aviaries for couples should be plan for females safety... And I don't want to breed babies too. Most of toos are bad parents... I'm not qualified to do hand feeding (in French we name it EAM, how do you tell it in English ?
What a mess. I'm always thinking about that. I need advices about so much subjects.
And I don't talk about feather picking... I'm so afraid of that.

Re: French galah and umbrella kktoos - 02/08/13 08:33 PM

I'm reading the forum and I don't understand abbrevations you use like
U2 ( i suppose it is not the group)
M2
BR2....

I saw that we talk about the same diseases, ABV, PDD but what is the name in English for the beak and feather disease (in french PBFD) ?

Thanks for your help

Re: French galah and umbrella kktoos - 02/08/13 09:28 PM

U2...Umbrella Cockatoo
M2...Moluccan
MM2...Major Mitchell
RB2...Rose-breasted
G2...Goffins
SC2...Sulphur crested
LSC2...Lesser Sulphur crested

Hope that helps some.

Re: French galah and umbrella kktoos - 02/08/13 10:15 PM

So
U2 : alba
MM2 : leadbeater
SC2 : galerita galerita (the bigger with the Triton)
LSC2 : sulphurea sulphurea ( the little one)

And what about eleonora, ducorps, corella, sulphurea citrinocristata ? Are there abreviations too ?

Thank you very much it's very kind of you.

Re: French galah and umbrella kktoos - 02/09/13 12:23 AM

Those would be E2, D2, C2, or whatever.

Most of the times when you post some will say they have a Moluccan and then change it to the shortened version. Also, once we get to know you and your birds everyone knows what you have and mean.

I will use both terms all the time.

Another thought, RELAX. You will pick up on everything in time. Also, try not to worry to much about them. We will try to help you as much as possible.

Re: French galah and umbrella kktoos - 02/09/13 12:33 AM

There is a previous posting somewhere here that Charlie sometimes reposts that list most of the cockatoo specie name abreviations. I tried searching for it but couldn't find it. I don't have a lot of luck searching for old posts here so its likely I'm doing something wrong. Maybe if Charlie reads this he might remember where it is and repost it for you.

As Elliot says "relax". With cockatoos, time is measured in months not weeks.

Thank you all for your precious help.
I will prepare you pictures and videos and explain their daily life with us. I trust on you to give me your opinion.
Just one thing that i think you will be not agree. My birds wings are unclipped. It's a personnal choice i will explain too.

Otherwise thanks a lot for your very kind welcome.

Re: French galah and umbrella kktoos - 02/09/13 01:59 PM

You're right it is a personal choice. Each of us make that decision based on our birds and life style. Cassie is unclipped as many others also.

Re: French galah and umbrella kktoos - 02/09/13 02:09 PM

Hi Stephaniet and welcome! I love this site.
My bird is not clipped either. Had more issues with feathers when she was clipped resulting in many trips to the vet. My vet suggested to leave her alone. She doesn't fly anyway, but I take the necessary precautions when she is out so she doesn't get hurt.

Re: French galah and umbrella kktoos - 02/09/13 02:35 PM

Hello,
Sacha and Chui enjoy flying. And they fly very very well. I spent a lot of time to educate (i'm not sure with this term) them. Step up, flying back when i call, telling them to go somewhere and spent time to handle them easy. It's easier for the vet.
When they are out of the cage, they are always under control and we tried to make the room as safety as possible.
They have so much energy, they need to fly.

Before their wings were clipped but until feathers grew, no bite and less screams.
When they want to be lazy they fly on their perches instead of biting.

I had more issues too with wings clipped (broken beak, the point and broken tail feather)

I'm agree, it depends on the life style, the bird and the owner. There is no rules, each parrot is unique and humain too : )

Re: French galah and umbrella kktoos - 02/09/13 02:40 PM

Interesting! Sebastian (my U2) had issues with tail feathers and blood feathers. She had a beak issue with her previous owner.

Re: French galah and umbrella kktoos - 02/09/13 03:06 PM

Yes, my galah broked a blood feather. It was a real bleeding. Of course, it happened on Sunday evening when vets are off. I had to pull out the feather, compress and disinfect. I was under stress but tried to keep it.

The beak issue was with my umbrella. I went to the vet. He did anesthesia and x ray, and reinforce with resin.

Now everything is ok.

She is beautiful. What is she saying? It seems very funny to hear a french accent on a bird! No offense meant just so different than all the birds I know.

Re: French galah and umbrella kktoos - 02/10/13 08:07 PM

Thank you, i try to do my best. Each day with my cockatoos is a huge pleasure. I think that for bearing a kktoo we need to love him. They are so specials.

This is their cage
http://media-perrok.net/files/photos/1360498177af05f7_o.png

And Sacha in the garden. She flyes outside with a harness and a lead (8m). I never let her alone outside because of birds of prey and the lead which could wind around a tree.
In the garden she enjoys training the flight with me. I don't know the english term. In french we call it rappel. I always use positiv reinforcement.
I don't use the harness with my RB2 because she's very stressfull outside. I trained her too but in the house.

Stunning pictures!!! What beautiful birds! I can't imagine a day without Mina. She is loved as much as my own daughter. I would love to put branches in her cage like that.

Re: French galah and umbrella kktoos - 02/11/13 12:55 PM

Great pictures! I love what you did to your cages also. Your birds are beautiful. I wish I could take my bird outside to fly. She gets spooked easily so I would not even attempt it, but she enjoys getting outside on my screened porch. This and trips to the vet are the closest thing she gets to being outside. She does not like the car though, as she gets carsick.

Thanks for sharing your pictures! Donna

Haha, he really enjoy himself there! What a cutie, and lucky you for easy showering. My lesser sulphur too hate being sprayed with water like that, so I have to take him with me in the shower; first I shower, then it is his turn while I`m holding him under the flowing water. It takes some time as he will never finish whistle

Re: French galah and umbrella kktoos - 02/18/13 01:18 PM

He looks like he is enjoying himself. I have to take my U2 into the shower with me. I let her go first and once she is finished she either sits on the shower curtain rod or on my towels until I'm done. It does take a while to get her in but once she's there she likes it. I wish she would allow me to spray her like that.

Re: French galah and umbrella kktoos - 08/09/13 06:21 PM

Hello all,

It's been time since I gave news from France. I was very busy with my company and i did a rescue. I rescued an eleonora male cockatoo. We are his third family.
He has been weaned by his first family. They sold him to a second young family. I don't know why ?
In his second family, the young woman was afraid of him. He never went out of his cage.

So with the bad weaning and the bad socibilization i had a little work with him.
He was shy for everything.

Now, he comes on my hand, i can tooch him, he goes out of his cage with pleasure and he enjoys playing with my U2. My rb2 is the chief and does't want to play for the moment.

Tomorrow we are going on holidays with them.

I will give you more informations later and pictures too. He's cute.
