perch made from pvc pipe

perch made from pvc pipe - 07/21/08 03:59 PM

i use the one for drinking water, make sure you wash it well after cutting the pieces before putting it together, i found out that it is too hard for him to chew it but lightweight enough that you can carry it around your yard. he keeps me company while i tend to my garden . and if anyone know how i could post the pic, i would be glad to do so and if interested give you the dimension as well. as we all know it is sooo expensive to buy one when you can make one for under $10

Super easy way to post pictures. Download the free photo software from google called picasa.

http://picasa.google.com/

Once the software is installed it will automatically find all your pictures for you. There is a one button click inside the software to upload your pictures to a free web album. You can create as many albums as you like. All you need to do is name your album and click upload.

Then just surf to your web album. Copy and paste the address (URL) into your post. That's it.

Obi, I'm looking forward to seeing the pics of your PVC perch. And yeah, I'd sure like the dimensions as well. I'd love something I can take in the back yard with me that's light & easy (not to mention cheap!)
Thanks!

Obie is beautiful. Custom hairdo's just make them more special.

Just an observation. Obie has a leg band. I would consider having the vet remove it for the birds safety. File it away with important papers.

(And it looks like time for a nail trim! You shouldn't take such great pictures)

Re: perch made from pvc pipe - 07/24/08 02:26 PM

well here are the pic of the perch and the dimension are as follow:
height from the ground : 3 ft
width: 3 ft
the pvc pipe on top of the base: 6 inches for the fist set and 4 on the second, but this can vary depending on your own specifications

the bottom brace is 5 inches from the ground, but if i was to do it again i would bring to 10 inches, would probably make it less wobly, but it is stable.

t connection : 14 pieces
elbow connection : 4 pieces
4 connection ( the one with a hole on all for side like a cross ) : 1
i did not glue them together and since it's small enough it hold together really well, i did leave 1 hole on top open so i can stick treats like sunflowers , corn on the cob and so forth

john,
lol, yes he needs his nail trim and i do it myself but this past few days he has not allowed me to touch his nails, but thank you very much for reminding me about that and the leg band thanks for that information as well. we don't have an avian vet here in the sticks, so i have to go to florida for her avian vet, but i will try to get that removed, since she is also microchip as well.

well guys i hope this help and any other question on it , be glad to give you more information

Re: perch made from pvc pipe - 07/24/08 02:35 PM

It looks great, like a play gym smile

You man want to get some natural rope and rap it tightly around the Areas he frequents in order to reduce his feet slipping. It will give him something to dig those talons of his into also. laugh

thanks, yes planning to do that just haven't had the time to get the rope, so far he has not done any slipping and slidding lol

Obie,
I love it! I'm going to copy it so thanks so much! Ah the simplicity of it.

Love your little house too. Reminds me of the house I used to have when I lived up in Mpls.

Re: perch made from pvc pipe - 07/24/08 05:17 PM

Cool gym! I wanted to make a hanging one since Kahlua climbs down from everything. Did you cut everything yourself? Any additional tips on using PVC? I can figure out most things, but I just HATE making additional trips to stores because I "missed something". I may do and cut this when I go back home to MN. My dad is pretty handy as well. Hopefully the pipes fit in my huge suitcase :P

Re: perch made from pvc pipe - 07/24/08 06:03 PM

thanks and yes, i just cut it myself.the size that i used was 3/4 for the pipe, and i just use a table saw the one that you pull down and cut 4 pieces at a time so that all measurement would be correct, i would get additional T connectors and joints same with the 4 joint connectors.just in case you want to modify to your specification. if you cut it straight there really is no need to glue them together, i've been carrying mine around the yard and it has not fallen apart yet lol. you can also drill holes on the perches so that you can hang some toys on it.

Re: perch made from pvc pipe - 07/24/08 09:36 PM

Having built a few from PVC I can testify they are great. Nice and lightweight, easy to clean and durable. I found that if your Too likes to climb and escape to the floor use a base that is too large for them to grasp. 2+ inches. It'll keep em out of trouble.

Re: perch made from pvc pipe - 08/11/08 11:52 PM

Just wanted to say I bought some PVC pipe today :P I'm in Minnesota now so my mom and I are going to build a playgym, then disassemble it to fit in the suitcase. There is a saw here so I'll be able to cut. Can't wait!!!

Re: perch made from pvc pipe - 08/12/08 03:08 AM

It's not that easy to make a nice clean cut on the end of the pipe with a regular handsaw. If you want you can go back to the hardware store in the plumbing department and ask for a "Pipe cutter".

It looks like a C clamp with rollers and a cutting wheel on it. You tighten it on the pipe as you rotate it around the pipe. Slowly and very cleanly it cuts the pipe off with very little effort. It's a very cheap item. They use it to cut copper pipe but it works even better on plastic.

Re: perch made from pvc pipe - 08/21/08 06:06 PM

or if you have a table saw, you can also use that, that is what i use to cut my pvc pipe and you can do 4 at a time smile

Re: perch made from pvc pipe - 08/21/08 06:56 PM

Depending on the size of the pipe you are cutting, they make a cutter that looks like a pair of garden pruning clippers. It cuts really easy and leaves a very clean cut.

Re: perch made from pvc pipe - 08/21/08 07:32 PM

I use a small bow-saw. It leaves a raggedy edge which I trim down with a snap knife.

Re: perch made from pvc pipe - 08/21/08 09:39 PM

My dad used his table saw (I think that's what it is, you move it down and it's electric??!) and it cut very nice. I have the gym sitting in the corner right now by where he plays. He is very scared of it now, etc etc. I need to hang it, maybe this weekend and attach some toys, then introduce.

Mine usually is pretty good about new things and new people! Grrrrrr

Mine was when he was little. He started this "I'm going to be afraid of new things until they prove themselves harmless" in the last couple of years. He still loves to jump on new people. Only problem is if they're guys, and they're in our apartment, he sometimes wants to see how they taste frown
